Studio Daydream JRM-OD Overdrive V5.0

Overdrive

The Studio Daydream JRM-OD Overdrive V5.0 is an overdrive pedal from Studio Daydream Handmade Pedals, and the latest version of the original JRM-OD. Pedal of the Day, reviewing it in March 2023, described it as building on the original unit, "improving functionality and tonal flavor throughout," and found that it "makes for a versatile drive that can suit any musical needs."1

The pedal's voicing is based on amp sounds from the 1960s blackface period, and it comes in a sleek-looking metal enclosure with true bypass switching.1 It sits in the wider family of overdrive pedals, and Studio Daydream also makes related drives such as the KCM-OD Gold V9.0 Overdrive and the Dhyana Overdrive V2.5.

Controls

At first glance, Pedal of the Day noted, "the JRM-OD may seem like just another 4-knob overdrive pedal," but it carries more than the usual four controls.1

ControlWhat it does
GainSets the amount of drive, paired with the Volume knob1
VolumeSets the output level1
BassBass EQ, part of the two-band EQ section1
TrebleTreble EQ, part of the two-band EQ section1
SaturationA small knob that helps add presence back into the mix1
Clipping toggleThree-position switch: DOWN for Symmetric, CENTER for Normal, UP for Asymmetric clipping modes1

The clipping modes and EQ

The JRM-OD's distinguishing feature is its custom three-mode switching of the clip diodes. The toggle switch selects between Symmetric (down), Normal (center) and Asymmetric (up) clipping, changing how the diodes shape the drive. Pedal of the Day found that "the 2-band EQ and custom 3 mode switching of the clip diodes can be used to create a wide range of sounds."1

"Studio Daydream Handmade Pedals has once again created a unique and marvelous drive."

Questions

Is the Studio Daydream JRM-OD true bypass?

Yes. Pedal of the Day notes that the JRM-OD Overdrive V5.0 uses Studio Daydream's usual true bypass switching, so the pedal is out of the signal path entirely when switched off, leaving your clean tone untouched.

What do the three clipping modes on the JRM-OD do?

A toggle switch selects between three clipping mode options for the pedal's diodes: DOWN for Symmetric, CENTER for Normal, and UP for Asymmetric. Combined with the two-band EQ, Pedal of the Day found these modes can be used to create a wide range of sounds.

What does the Saturation knob do?

The Saturation knob is a small additional control on the JRM-OD. According to Pedal of the Day, it helps add presence back into the mix, letting the pedal sit in a band context without being buried.

Does the JRM-OD have a bass and treble control?

Yes. The JRM-OD Overdrive V5.0 has a two-band EQ section with separate Bass and Treble knobs, alongside the Volume, Gain and Saturation controls and the clipping mode toggle.
