The Surfy Industries Surfy-Man is a preamp plus tremolo pedal built to replicate the sound of a Brownface amplifier combined with the same circuitry of a Showman amp head. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes Surfy Industries as "the pedal company most invested in the real spring pedal format", and the Surfy-Man extends that amp-focused approach into the preamp and tremolo territory1.
What it does
As a preamp, the Surfy-Man is voiced to put a Brownface-style amp sound in front of the rest of a pedalboard or to feed a flat-response power section. The characteristics De Gregorio attributes to it are "A fat tone, plenty of sustain and brightness, power"1.
Its EQ is a distinctive part of the design: "with its peculiarly tuned three-way EQ section", in his words, meaning the three tone controls are not a generic bass-mid-treble layout but are tuned around the character of the amp circuit being recreated1.
Running direct
A practical feature for players who record or play without an amp on stage: the Surfy-Man "can be connected directly into a mixing console, PA or a set of headphones"1. That makes it usable as a compact amp substitute for silent practice, home recording or direct-to-PA gigs, with the tremolo section available in the same box.
