The TC Electronic Alter Ego X4 Vintage Echo is a digital delay pedal that packs vintage echo emulations into the four-footswitch format of TC's Flashback X4. It was created in partnership with American retailer ProGuitarShop, whose "tonehounds" worked with TC Electronic to tune its 12 exclusive delay tones12. Instead of a general-purpose delay palette, the voices replicate classic echo machines: the Binson Echorec, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, the Watkins Copicat and more2.

Under the hood it is a digital delay, as Premier Guitar's reviewer put it plainly: "The Alter Ego X4 is a superb digital delay"3. What sets it apart is the voicing of those algorithms, plus the full X4 feature set: three assignable presets, tap tempo, a 40-second looper and a choice between true and buffered bypass2.

What it does: vintage echo voices in a four-switch delay

TC Electronic announced the Alter Ego X4 in June 2014 as a follow-up to the earlier Alter Ego Delay, describing it as "nothing short of a vintage vibed delay monster" that carried over "all the things that made the original Flashback X4 such a killer delay"1. Guitar Interactive reported it as a second collaboration: "TC Electronic and ProGuitarShop team up once again to build upon their former smash hit, the Alter Ego Delay"5.

The pitch is simple. Where the Flashback X4 covers a broad range of delay sounds, the Alter Ego X4 concentrates on carefully replicated vintage echo presets, "including the likes of the Binson Echorec, Roland RE-201 Space Echo and Watkins Copicat"2. One voice is "a unique modulated take on TC's very own 2290 delay"1, and the pedal also includes a 2290 Modulated mode among its delay types4.

MusicRadar's reviewer summed up the concept in his verdict:

"For vintage delay connoisseurs, the Alter Ego X4 is a dream come true, with emulations of some of the best echoes committed to tape."2

The delay types

The Delay Type knob selects among 12 modes4, and four TonePrint slots sit alongside them for sounds of your own choosing2. The modes documented by Pedal of the Day are:

Premier Guitar's 2021 review went voice by voice. On the first Echorec setting: "The first Echorec voice (E REC 1) will be a big draw for Pink Floyd obsessives," and it "nails much of the original's metallic, submarine liveliness, especially when you stack the repeats on heavy," though the reviewer found it "lacks the cool, murky darkness of the original and reveals its digital origins"3. The Deluxe Memory Man settings "mostly nail the essence of the original, though trace digital artifacts are heard in the slightly too-clean repeats," and their vibrato and chorus run at a fixed intensity3. The TR Organ voice, inspired by the rare Tel-Ray "oil-can" Organ Tone that also shaped the pedal's graphics, delivers "an intense, Leslie-in-a-Bathysphere wobble that's deep and full of character" and "sounds amazing for languid psychedelic chords and warped jazz comping"3. The Boss-inspired BDM2 setting "is perfect for subtle textures," and the Watkins Copicat voice "does a great job of replicating the dense wash of a multi-head setting and sounds great at heavy feedback levels"3.

The controls and footswitches

Each delay is shaped by a conventional control set of time, delay and feedback, with "very different characteristics, ranges, and personalities for each delay type"3. The full control layout as documented:

ControlWhat it does
Delay TypeSelects among the 12 delay modes4
Delay TimeSets delay time from 20ms up to 7000ms (7 seconds)4
FeedbackSets the number of desired repeats4
Delay LevelControls the intensity of the delayed repeats, affecting only the effect and not the dry signal4
Subdivision toggleSelects Quarter Notes, Dotted Eighths, or both4
Looper toggleSmall switch near the middle right of the pedal selects Looper mode4

The four footswitches are the heart of the design. Three are dedicated to user-defined presets and looper operation, while "the fourth doubles as a tap tempo and undo switch"3. In Looper mode, the four footswitches switch over to Record, Play, Once and Undo functions for controlling the 40-second looper2. There is also an expression pedal input: TC says "you can even control any delay parameter via the expression pedal input"1.

The looper is not on its own switch. You reach it by flipping the small toggle switch into Looper mode, at which point all four footswitches change function4.

History and versions

The Alter Ego X4 sits in a small family tree. TC Electronic launched the Flashback X4 in 2012 with true bypass (optional buffered) and the same four-switch preset-and-looper architecture6. The original Alter Ego Delay came out of the first TC and ProGuitarShop collaboration, and the Alter Ego X4 built on it in 20145. Later that year TC followed up with the Alter Ego V2 Vintage Echo, which, as Guitar Interactive reported, "sees nine of the lush echo sounds from Alter Ego X4 moved to the compact form factor"7. RockBoard's product page for the V2 describes it as combining "the best features and sounds from the original ALTER EGO and ALTER EGO X4," with 9 vintage delay sounds reproduced by ProGuitarShop and TC Electronic8. MusicRadar's V2 review counts 11 delay types in the compact version and notes its 40-second looper is activated by switching the delay type control to its LP setting9.

The X4 also found an afterlife in the mod scene. Loophole Pedals offered three mods for the pedal: a footswitch upgrade replacing the stock surface-mounted actuators with heavy-duty chassis-mounted clickless switches, a feedback mod adding an onboard footswitch for infinite oscillations, and a looper mod adding a footswitch to enter and exit looper mode quickly10. Pedal of the Day called the new footswitches "a vast improvement"10.

Alter Ego X4 versus Flashback X4

MusicRadar frames the relationship directly: "TC's Flashback X4 Delay is already a pedalboard mainstay, but with the Alter Ego X4, the tonehounds at American retailer" ProGuitarShop gave the platform a vintage voice2. In practical terms, the two pedals share the chassis, the four-footswitch preset and looper system, the switchable true or buffered bypass, and the TonePrint slots; the difference is the delay palette, with the Alter Ego X4's 12 types aimed at vintage echo replication rather than the Flashback's wider range126.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar's overall verdict was positive across the board: the vintage echoes "sound spot on," the pedal is easy to use, the TonePrint slots "put contemporary sounds within easy reach," and the reviewer found "very little to avoid" overall2. Premier Guitar's detailed review was more mixed on individual voices, praising the Echorec, Tel-Ray and Copicat emulations while noting digital artifacts in the Memory Man settings and the fixed modulation intensity there3. At a street price of $269 at the time of that review, it positioned the pedal as a premium delay in TC's lineup3.

Questions

Is the Alter Ego X4 true bypass or buffered?

Both. The pedal gives you a choice between true bypass and buffered bypass, so you can keep your dry signal path clean or run it buffered to protect your tone through a long pedalboard chain. The choice is a feature TC Electronic carried over from the Flashback X4 platform the pedal is built on.

How long is the Alter Ego X4 looper?

The built-in looper records up to 40 seconds. You enter looper mode with a small toggle switch near the middle right of the pedal, and the four footswitches then handle Record, Play, Once and Undo functions, so the whole pedal becomes a looping station.

Can the Alter Ego X4 load TonePrints?

Yes. Beyond its 12 built-in delay types, the pedal has four TonePrint slots you can fill with TonePrints of your choice. TonePrints are delay sounds created and tuned by TC Electronic and guest artists, beamed into the pedal, and stored in those slots like extra presets.

What is the difference between the Alter Ego X4 and the Flashback X4?

The Alter Ego X4 is a vintage-voiced take on the Flashback X4 platform. It keeps the Flashback X4's core feature set, including the looper, presets and bypass options, but its 12 delay types are tuned to replicate vintage echo units like the Binson Echorec, Roland RE-201 Space Echo and Watkins Copicat rather than the Flashback's broader delay palette.

Does the Alter Ego X4 sync to MIDI clock?

Not on its own, but it can. Molten Voltage documented the Alter Ego X4 among pedals that sync to MIDI Clock when used with Molten Voltage PedalBoard MIDI Devices, so players running a synced rig can lock its delay to an external clock through that hardware.
