The TC Electronic Zeus Drive is a compact overdrive and boost pedal from TC Electronic, built around the Klon Centaur's approach to gain: it blends some of the clean signal back into the overdriven signal, the same circuit topology that made the original Klon Centaur famous1. TC Electronic presents it as a dynamic overdrive, and the press received it as a low-cost way into Klon-style transparent overdrive2.
The drive section is all analog34, with a clipping stage built on a pair of 1N34A germanium diodes that deliver smooth, soft clipping and sweet, pleasing highs45. Internally the pedal steps up its 9V supply voltage, which TC Electronic says gives it a huge dynamic range and plenty of output level41.
A compact Klon-style overdrive
The Zeus Drive sits in a small, sturdy golden metal enclosure measuring 2.2" x 2.2" x 3.9", with the quarter-inch input and output jacks and the 9V DC power input mounted on the top of the box rather than the sides6. Pedal of the Day called it "an amazingly compact, built-like-a-tank metal box"4.
Like the original Klon Centaur, the circuit blends some of the clean signal back into the overdriven signal1. Delicious Audio described the result as "a dynamic and transparent boost-to-mid-gain overdrive pedal"1, and MusicRadar reported that it promises "an amp-like touch sensitivity and a transparent drive"7. Size-wise and price-wise, MusicRadar noted it is a similar deal to TC Electronic's Magus Pro7.
The controls are the three classic knobs found on almost all Klon-style pedals, plus a toggle1:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drive (Gain) | Dual concentric control that progressively blends overdrive into the clean signal while increasing clipping, for an amp-like touch and response4 |
| Volume (Output) | Sets output level; the stepped-up internal voltage gives it high output power through this control48 |
| Treble | A treble attenuator rather than a standard tone control, letting you dial in highs without thinning the lower frequencies8 |
| Fat switch | Toggle that adds extra bass, tightens the low-end response and thickens up the low mids356 |
The drive control's clean-blend behavior is the heart of the Klon-style design: Guitar Player reported that it "progressively blends overdrive with a buffered clean signal to deliver transparent, amp-like tone and response"8. On the Fat switch, TC Electronic says the engaged sound is perfect for "gut-wrenching, chugging, riffery"5.
Power and connections: 9V, stepped up inside
The Zeus Drive runs from a 9V DC barrel-style power input, and there is no battery option6. Inside the pedal, that 9V is stepped up to a higher internal voltage, a design choice TC Electronic made for improved headroom41. Pedal of the Day reported that the stepped-up voltage results in "huge dynamic range and buckets of output level"4.
Because there is no battery compartment, the Zeus Drive needs a 9V DC power supply or a powered pedalboard from day one6.
The bypass is selectable: a dip switch inside the pedal lets you choose between true bypass and a high quality buffered bypass4. TC Electronic's product page lists the buffered bypass as optional3. For a player with long cable runs or several pedals in front of it, the buffered option can be the better choice; the internal switch means you can change your mind without buying anything.
Germanium diodes and the first 2,000 units
At launch, the first 2,000 units sold carried a pair of germanium clipping diodes9, the same 1N34A type associated with the Klon circuit45. Germanium diodes clip at a lower voltage than silicon, which is part of why Klon-style pedals are described as smooth and touch-sensitive.
Analog Man notes that the Zeus Drive uses green striped diodes, and offers a mod to change them for players who want a different clipping character10.
What reviewers said
Reviews were positive about the pedal's value and feel, with one recurring caveat about versatility21.
- Pedal of the Day called it "a powerful, useful and compact drive for the ages," praising its warm tone and dynamic response4.
- Guitar Player's Klon-clone buying guide found that "it manages to replicate the general tones and feel of a Klon, reacting superbly to dynamic playing," while noting it lacks the tonal versatility of more expensive competitors2.
- Delicious Audio added it to their list of Best Klon Clones, writing that it "seems to be at least in part intended to deliver Klon-style gain goodness at a decimal fraction of the cost"1.
- MusicRadar called the launch price "a quite ridiculously cheap £45 / $59"7.
"Whilst it doesn't have the tonal versatility of more expensive competitors, it manages to replicate the general tones and, importantly, feel of a Klon, reacting superbly to dynamic playing."
MusicRadar also suggested three ways to use it: keep it on all the time to sweeten the tone, step on it when solos need some oomph, or crank it for hot mid-level drive crunch7.

Questions
Is the TC Electronic Zeus Drive true bypass or buffered?
It can be either. Inside the pedal there is a dip switch that lets you choose between true bypass and a high quality buffered bypass, so you can set it to suit the rest of your pedalboard. TC Electronic lists the buffered bypass as an optional feature.
Does the Zeus Drive take a battery?
No. The pedal runs from a 9V DC barrel-style power input only, with no battery option, so you will need a power supply or a pedalboard power unit to run it.
What does the Fat switch on the Zeus Drive do?
The Fat toggle adds extra bass and tightens the low-end response. Premier Guitar described it as a fat boost toggle that thickens up the low mids, and Guitar Player reported that engaging it induces a warm and enveloping bottom end.
Is the Zeus Drive a Klon clone?
It is a Klon-style pedal rather than a straight copy. Like the Klon Centaur, it blends some of the clean signal back into the overdriven signal, and reviewers found it replicates the general tones and feel of a Klon at a much lower price.
Is the TC Electronic Zeus Drive analog?
Yes. Premier Guitar confirmed that the Zeus Drive's drive section is all analog, and the clipping stage uses a pair of 1N34A germanium diodes for smooth, soft clipping.
How do you switch the Zeus Drive to true bypass?
Open the pedal and move the internal dip switch. The switch selects between true bypass and the pedal's high quality buffered bypass, so no external control is needed.
