The Tech 21 SansAmp Classic is an all-analog preamp pedal with a built-in speaker and cab sim, designed by B. Andrew Barta and first released in 1989. Tech 21 calls it "the catalyst for the whole 'going direct' movement way back in 1989": a pedal that lets you plug straight into a mixing desk and get a recorded tube-amp sound without an amp, a cabinet or a microphone1. The maker describes its job as delivering "the warm, rich, natural tones of the most desirable tube amplifiers on the planet"1.
It was in constant production for 27 years until 2016, when it was put on a manufacturing hiatus, and it was reissued in 2021 after a surge in popular demand23. The reissue keeps the same compact enclosure and the same circuit, and it is still made in the USA1. Tech 21 has since announced another limited-quantity run scheduled for early 202645.
The controls: Character switches, Input modes and knobs
The front panel splits into two idea groups: a bank of eight Character dip-switches and a set of knobs. Tech 21 says the Character switches "adjust the fine and subtle nuances of tonality, harmonics and dynamics," while the knob controls "shape pre-amp contours, power amp contours, volume and final tone"1. Gearnews describes the interface as "super simple: Presence Drive, Amplifier Drive, High and Output"2.
A three-position Input switch selects the preamp style1:
| Input position | Preamp style | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Lead | Marshall-style | Mid-range and highs emphasized1 |
| Normal | Mesa Boogie-style | Mesa Boogie-type preamp voicing1 |
| Bass | Fender-style | Excellent for rhythm guitar as well as bass1 |
MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley describes the Lead position as giving "the sound of a Marshall-style preamps, with an emphasis on the mids and top end"6. MusicRadar also notes the layout in its round-up of must-have stompboxes: "a series of dip-switches on the front for selecting the character of your tone, plus three input switches for selecting the flavour of preamp gain"7.
One design choice worth knowing: the SansAmp Classic was "specifically engineered with a flat output to provide maximum flexibility and control with external EQ"1. Rather than baking in a fixed tone curve, it leaves final shaping to whatever EQ you put after it, in the studio or on your pedalboard.
Power and connections
The pedal runs on a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included, or on an optional DC power supply, Tech 21 model #DC9. The former #DC2 and #DC4 supplies also work1. There is no stated current draw or polarity detail on the maker's page, so if you run it from a power supply, the DC9 is the documented option.
The built-in speaker and cab sim is what makes the "going direct" approach work: the output is voiced so it can feed a mixing desk or recorder without the harshness of a raw preamp signal1. Tech 21's own sound samples for the pedal were "recorded direct using only a SansAmp Classic and standard studio outboard EQ and reverb equipment"1.
History: original, hiatus and reissue
The timeline runs like this:
- 1989: B. Andrew Barta's all-analog SansAmp Classic is introduced, the first pedal aimed at recording guitar direct with a tube-amp character18.
- 2009: For Tech 21's 20th anniversary, the company releases the SansAmp Classic 20, a special relic-style version. Its "main heart of the circuitry and inner workings were virtually unchanged" from the original9.
- 2016: After 27 years of constant production, the pedal is put on a manufacturing hiatus83.
- 2021: Reissued after a 5-year hiatus and a surge in popular demand, with the same compact enclosure and the same circuit under the hood684.
- Early 2026: Tech 21 announces another limited-quantity run, virtually unchanged and still made in the USA45.
The Classic 20 came with a DC power supply included in the US and Canada only, Tech 21 model #DC1, alongside battery operation9. MusicRadar covered the artificially aged Relic version in 2009, calling it "the faux-aged SansAmp Classic Relic from Tech 21"10.
The design's influence reaches beyond the pedal itself. Delicious Audio notes that "the design of the Classic inspired many of our products but there's still only one original," and that it inspired many later products and today's digital amp and cab modeling units11. Its user base has been broad: Bass Magazine reports it "has been used for every kind of music style from death metal to commercial jingles, in countless pro studios, on tours around the globe"411, and Delicious Audio credits producer Tchad Blake with "famously using a bunch of them during mixing on drums and percussions"11. Kurt Cobain reportedly used an original SansAmp circa the In Utero period6; Gearnews writes that he "used the SansAmp as his main distortion for many years, switching between this and the GT-2 version at various stages of his career"2.
Inside the circuit
For players who care about what is under the hood, the DIY community at Guitar FX Layouts traced the circuit. It uses TL072 and TL074 op amps, a 2SK117 JFET and 1N755 zener diodes, with a 1N4148 small signal diode in the power section serving as reverse polarity protection12. The same source reports that "there were some noise issues with the original buffered version" of the bypass, and that a true bypass version of the layout was later added12. Tech 21's own page does not state a bypass type for the current reissue.
What reviewers said
Coverage of the 2021 reissue was positive. Gearnews' writer liked the lack of digital overhead: "No displays, no submenus, no opulent power supply requirements and no decisions about which of the hundreds of presets might work best"2.
"I love the simplicity and I've used one myself many times over the years, with great results."
The same review closed with "It's good to see this back!"2. On the 2009 Relic version, MusicRadar's Simon Bradley wrote that "the unit is still as good as ever it was at getting authentic guitar sounds down for all eternity," and summed up the overall impression with "We reckon it's as cool as two naked Eskimos having a snowball fight in the dead of night"10.

Questions
Can the SansAmp Classic run on a battery?
Yes. Tech 21 lists the pedal as operable with a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included. It can also run on an optional 9V DC power supply, Tech 21 model #DC9, and the former #DC2 and #DC4 supplies also work.
Is the SansAmp Classic true bypass?
The original SansAmp Classic used a buffered bypass, and the DIY layout community at Guitar FX Layouts reports there were some noise issues with that original buffered version. A true bypass version of the layout was later added. Tech 21's own product page does not state a bypass type for the reissue.
Can you use the SansAmp Classic on bass?
Yes. The three-position Input switch includes a Bass position, which Tech 21 describes as a Fender-type preamp style that is excellent for rhythm guitar as well as bass. The pedal has also seen heavy studio and touring use across every style from death metal to commercial jingles.
What op amps are in the SansAmp Classic?
According to the circuit trace published by Guitar FX Layouts, the SansAmp Classic uses TL072 and TL074 op amps, a 2SK117 JFET, 1N755 zener diodes and a 1N4148 small signal diode that serves as reverse polarity protection in the power section.
Did Kurt Cobain use a SansAmp?
Reportedly, yes. MusicRadar reports that Kurt Cobain used an original SansAmp circa the In Utero period, and Gearnews writes that he used the SansAmp as his main distortion for many years, switching between it and the GT-2 version at various stages of his career.
