The Universal Audio UAFX Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp is a digital amp-emulation pedal that models an early '80s Dumble Overdrive Special, the amp design Alexander "Howard" Dumble built his reputation on12. Where a real Overdrive Special is a rare, expensive custom amp, the Enigmatic '82 puts a modeled version of its tones into a stompbox-sized, pedalboard-friendly package3. It launched on 24 September 2024 at $3993.
The pedal covers the range the original amps are known for. GuitarPlayer's review found it "nails the essence of Alexander Dumble's amp tones, ranging from ultra-crisp" clean sounds to gritty bluesy breakup4. It is a fully digital design, what Sound On Sound's Dave Lockwood described as a digital guitar-amp emulation pedal, with speaker and microphone modeling built in so it can go straight into a recording setup or PA51.
A Dumble-style amp in a pedal
Dumble amplifiers are hand-built custom amps, and the Overdrive Special is, as Guitar World's Matt McCracken put it, "arguably the most famous of Alexander 'Howard' Dumble's designs"5. Universal Audio modeled an early '80s example of that amp for this pedal1. The press release around launch called it a "D-Style" emulation6.
The project had a public paper trail. In early 2024, three UAFX pedals, Mental, Enigmatic, and Knuckles, were leaked on a guitar forum via a US Patent Office entry6. Around the same time, at the 2024 NAMM Show, UA's Bill Putnam Jr. asked a GuitarPlayer reviewer what amp the company should model next, and the reviewer's answer was Dumble6. The pedal was announced and released on 24 September 20246.
The design work was led by Universal Audio Sr. Product Designer James Santiago3. Announcing the pedal, Santiago said:
"With Enigmatic '82, we're giving players of all genres the evolving magic that made these amps so legendary with more customization than we've ever put in a UAFX pedal."3
The pedal ships in a mocha-brown finish with two footswitches, one for bypass and one for preset changes6.
The controls
The control surface is six knobs plus three three-way switches6. Several knobs double up: holding or engaging an alt function reveals a second parameter, mirroring the hidden tweaks a Dumble owner would have had a technician make inside the amp.
| Control | Primary function | Alt function |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Volume | Room |
| Overdrive | Overdrive | Ratio |
| Bass | Bass | Deep/Mid |
| Middle | Middle | Presence |
| Treble | Treble | Bright |
| Output | Output level | - |
| Left switch | Selects between three cabinet emulations | - |
| Middle switch | Mode: ALT (secondary functions), AMP (set virtual amplifier), STORE (save presets) | - |
| Right switch | Changes the pedal's tonal character | - |
The mode switch on the right side selects between three tonalities: rock, jazz, and custom15. The tonestack behavior runs deeper than the panel suggests. Sound On Sound's reviewer noted that with the Bass control above halfway, the pedal rolls off some high end in Deep mode with the Classic tone stack, or boosts midrange with the Skyline tone stack1.
Cab emulations and the UAFX app
The pedal carries three cabinet emulations on its left switch, including a 1x12 Black GB256. In total it offers nine cab emulations, including different microphone setups13. The UAFX Mobile app adds six more cabs, among them a 4x12 UK V30, plus a bonus cab modeled on a custom-made Dumble 1x12 with a vintage JBL G-125 speaker, miked with a 421 dynamic12.
The UAFX Control Mobile app, available on iOS and Android, is where the deeper editing lives4. Gearnews reviewer Julian Schmauch described it:
"In it, you get various hidden tweaks, EQ settings, and amp-to-amp voicing modifications, just like the legendary original!"6
GuitarPlayer's review called the app "another ocean of possibilities" beyond the pedal's front panel4.
Stereo, USB-C and MIDI
The Enigmatic '82 offers full stereo, with both inputs and outputs doubled: two 1/4" TS inputs, two 1/4" TS outputs, and a USB-C connection5. Sound On Sound confirmed stereo in and out jacks on the review unit1. The pedal also supports Bluetooth pairing4.
Firmware 2.0 lets players store four presets on the Enigmatic '82 and switch between them on the hardware itself5.
At 400mA current draw, the pedal needs a proper 9V DC power supply rather than a battery or a low-current daisy chain, and the adapter is not included54.
What reviewers said
Reviews across the press were positive:
- Guitar World (Matt McCracken): "the UA Enigmatic is a superb amp simulator that delivers creamy overdriven tones alongside a brilliant clean channel tha[t] takes pedals well", versatile across playing styles5
- GuitarPlayer: the pedal "nails the essence of Alexander Dumble's amp tones", from ultra-crisp clean to gritty bluesy breakup4
- Premier Guitar: "the performance-to-price ratio struck me as very favorable indeed"2
- gearnews (Julian Schmauch): rated it 4,5 / 5,06
- Sound On Sound (Dave Lockwood): "This is another fabulous piece of work from the UA modelling team!"1
A later gearnews piece on Dumble-style pedals referred to it simply as "an excellent-sounding pedal version" of the amp7.
How it relates to other UAFX pedals
The Enigmatic '82 sits in Universal Audio's line of amp-emulation stompboxes, which includes pedals like the UAFX Lion '68 Super Lead Amp, a Marshall Plexi-style model645. In terms of layout, gearnews noted the Enigmatic '82 "seems to work a lot like the Anti in its control elements", sharing the same control scheme with a different modeled amp underneath6. For players comparing it against conventional gain pedals, it is worth reading alongside overdrive pedals generally: it is an amp model with cab and mic simulation, not a clipping circuit in the traditional sense.

Questions
Is the UAFX Enigmatic '82 a Dumble clone?
It is a digital emulation of an early '80s Dumble Overdrive Special rather than a circuit clone. Universal Audio modeled the amp's tones and behavior, and reviewers at GuitarPlayer and Guitar World found it captures the character of Alexander Dumble's designs, from ultra-crisp clean sounds to gritty bluesy breakup. The pedal also adds voicing options the original amps hid inside.
How much does the UAFX Enigmatic '82 cost?
It launched on 24 September 2024 at $399 in the US. A retailer price of $338 was recorded in 2024 and again in May 2025, so street prices have sat below the launch figure. UK pricing has been listed at £379 and £380 including VAT.
Does the Enigmatic '82 work in stereo?
Yes. It has two 1/4-inch TS inputs and two 1/4-inch TS outputs, giving full stereo operation on both the ins and the outs. Sound On Sound's reviewer confirmed stereo in and out jacks on the unit.
Does the Enigmatic '82 support MIDI?
Yes, since firmware 2.0, released in November 2025. The update added MIDI functionality across the compatible UAFX pedal range, along with four presets storable and switchable on the hardware itself, improved Bluetooth, and a USB-to-Mobile connection option.
Can you use the Enigmatic '82 straight into an audio interface?
Yes. It is an amp-emulation pedal with speaker and microphone modeling built in, so it is designed to sound like a miked amp without a real cabinet. It also has a USB-C connection, and firmware 2.0 added a USB-to-Mobile connection option.
What is the difference between the Enigmatic '82 and the UAFX Anti?
According to gearnews reviewer Julian Schmauch, the Enigmatic '82 works a lot like the UAFX Anti in its control elements, sharing the same switch and knob layout. The difference is the amp being modeled: the Enigmatic '82 emulates a Dumble Overdrive Special, while the Anti is a different model in the UAFX line.
