The Valeton Dapper Bass Mini is a multi-effects strip built for bass players: one compact metal unit that chains a tuner, a bass amp with EQ, a boost and compressor combo, and a chorus, with a headphone output and a balanced XLR out on top. Valeton describes it as "a seriously potent effects strip with all the essentials for bass players"1. Where a typical pedalboard spreads those jobs across five or six boxes, the Dapper Bass Mini puts them in a single 197mm-wide enclosure, the same footprint as the other Mini strips in the Dapper line.

It sits in the middle of Valeton's Dapper family. The full-size Valeton Dapper Bass is the larger all-in-one version at 320mm wide, with an FX loop for extending the chain and a THRU output for parallel effects or re-amping2. The Dapper Bass Mini keeps the core modules and the smaller board footprint.

The modules and the PHONES knob

The signal chain starts with the tuner. Valeton calls it "a stealth fast and accurate tuner so you can play confidently in tune"1. From there the signal runs through the BASS AMP module, which Valeton says has an EQ that "is golden with cleans and highly responsive even with the gain up"1.

Next is the BOOST COMP module, which Valeton describes as "a booster and compressor combo"1, a pairing that suits bass: the compressor even out your note-to-note levels while the boost pushes the front of the amp harder. The CHORUS module follows, with onboard rate and depth knobs to "beef up your tone"1, the same control layout as the chorus on the regular Dapper Mini.

PHONESHeadphone output with volume controlPHONES knob

The PHONES knob adjusts the headphone output volume1, the same arrangement as on the Dapper Acoustic Mini and the Dapper MDR. Valeton says the headphone jack "works great with silent guitars"1, so silent practice is a real use case rather than an afterthought.

Inputs, outputs and power

The rear panel carries everything a bass player needs for a gig or a desk:

  • Instrument input: 1/4" unbalanced TS jack, 1MΩ input impedance1
  • Unbalanced output: 1/4" TS jack, 100Ω1
  • XLR OUT: feeds a balanced signal to audio interfaces or mixers1
  • PHONES output: 1/8" TRS jack1
  • AUX input: XLR jack, 100Ω, for connecting a phone or MP3 player1

The XLR out means you can go straight to a mixing desk or audio interface without a separate DI box, and the AUX input lets you play along with tracks from a phone. The full-size Dapper Bass adds a THRU output jack for parallel effects or re-amping2, which the Mini does not have.

The Dapper Bass Mini draws 1500mA at 9V DC center negative1. That is far more than most single pedals, so a typical low-current daisy chain output will not run it. A power supply is included with the unit.

Where it fits in the Dapper line

The Dapper Bass Mini shares its 197 x 65 x 42mm dimensions with the other Mini strips in the range, including the Dapper Mini, Dapper Amp Mini, Dapper MDR and Dapper Looper Mini, while the full-size Dapper, Dapper Bass, Dapper Dark and Dapper Indie are all 320mm wide21. Several of those siblings, including the original Dapper, Dapper Dark, Dapper Amp Mini and Dapper Looper Mini, are now discontinued, so the Mini format is where the line has settled.

Writing about the Dapper Looper Mini in 2019, Pedal of the Day's reviewer found the Mini format practical on a real board3:

"it will fit on just about any pedalboard you might have, so it is convenient AND an excellent tool to use"3

That size argument applies across the Mini line, the Dapper Bass Mini included: one strip replaces several boxes, at the cost of not being able to rearrange or swap the individual modules the way you could with separate pedals.

Questions

Does the Valeton Dapper Bass Mini have an XLR output?

Yes. The Dapper Bass Mini has an XLR OUT that feeds a balanced signal to audio interfaces or mixers, so you can record directly or go straight to a PA without an extra DI box.

Can I practice silently with headphones on the Dapper Bass Mini?

Yes. Plug headphones into the PHONES jack for practicing and jamming, and use the PHONES knob to set the output volume. Valeton says it works great with silent guitars too.

What power supply does the Dapper Bass Mini use?

It runs on 9V DC center negative, and a power supply is included. Current consumption is 1500mA, which is high for a single pedal, so it needs a supply that can deliver that much current.

What effects are in the Dapper Bass Mini?

It combines a fast, accurate tuner, a bass amp module with EQ, a boost and compressor combo, and a chorus module with rate and depth knobs, plus a headphone output with cab simulation.

How big is the Dapper Bass Mini?

It measures 197mm wide by 65mm deep by 42mm high and weighs 440g, in a compact metal casing. That footprint is the same as the other Mini strips in the Dapper line.
