The Number 23 is a fuzz pedal from Vaux Flores that adds an octave effect on top of the fuzz. Pedal of the Day described it as a fuzz with "a splash of upper octave cream and heterodyned, atonal artifacts", meaning the upper octave sits over a lower-register fuzz tone rather than replacing it. The reviewer heard "an almost robotic feeling to this pedal", with a low fuzz suited to doom metal and classic rock1.
Controls and how it works
The pedal's Blend control is central to its sound: it "mixes your clean signal in with the fuzz effect, for getting the perfect amount you need", according to Pedal of the Day. Alongside the Blend, Tone and Volume controls, the Number 23 has a Feedback switch. The reviewer wrote that "this switch, when coupled with the other controls, really makes this pedal stand out from any typical fuzz we've encountered", taking the sound "from a slight, ramped buzz to a full-on sonic ear assault"1.
Where it came from
The Number 23 was designed by Travis Johns, and Pedal of the Day called it "another unique pedal from Travis and the Vaux Flores folks". The pedals are made in-house in small batches1. One detail the reviewer highlighted: "the Number 23 is the first effects pedal to feature artwork created by amplified earthworms"1.
Vaux Flores also makes the Gold Standard Fuzz, a related fuzz in the maker's range1. For more on the effect type, see Fuzz Pedals, and for the octave side of the circuit, Octave & Pitch Pedals.
What reviewers said
Pedal of the Day's 2018 review summed the pedal up as "Small, purple, full of tone and killer in any setup"1.
