The Walrus Audio Fundamental Fuzz is a three-mode aggressive fuzz pedal with a wide tonal range, built as part of Walrus Audio's entry-level Fundamental series. Instead of knobs it uses three sliders, Gain, Tone and Volume, plus a slide switch that moves between three distinct fuzz voices: Gate, Classic and Mid+1. Walrus describes it as a pedal that can live anywhere in your chain, hit with an overdrive in front or pushing another distortion behind it1.

The pedal is discontinued. Walrus Audio's product page states it is discontinued and no longer available2, so it is now a secondhand or clearance item rather than a current catalog product.

What it does: a three-mode fuzz

The Fundamental Fuzz keeps its control surface to four elements: three sliders and a mode switch, plus a bypass footswitch5. Each control does one clear job:

ControlWhat it does
Gain sliderSets the amount of gain applied to the guitar signal passing through the fuzz circuit1
Tone sliderControls the frequency response after distortion; left of center cuts highs, right of center cuts lows6
Volume sliderSets the overall output volume of the pedal6
Slide switchChanges between three distinct flavors of the pedal, each with different clipping modes or tone profiles6

The finish is black with light-orange and off-white ink, and the enclosure is a compact diecast box sized 4.33" x 2.16" x 1.61"1. Walrus also lists an Analog Dry-Through feature, keeping the dry portion of the signal in the analog domain1.

Gate, Classic and Mid+ modes

The three modes are where the pedal's range lives, and each has a distinct character:

ModeCharacter
GateLowers the bias voltage in the main fuzz section, creating a gated and starved sound, often described as sputtery and velcro-like6
ClassicScreaming fuzz with an iconic mid scoop, compressed and crunchy6
Mid+Adds a mid boost to flatten the tone stage, for a compressed but rich and full sound6

MusicRadar's reviewer called the Gate mode "velcro city," described Classic as a scooped affair with an op-amp Big Muff vibe, and noted that Mid+ offers the presence to sit best in a band mix5. Guitar World's reviewer found that Mid+ mode "puts the mids back with smooth sustain that's great for a dollop of classic rock"7.

Trevor Curwen, Guitar World7

Is it a Big Muff clone?

Not a copy, but the Muff lineage is unmistakable in Classic mode. Delicious Audio described that setting as "a classic fuzz sound reminiscent of the Muff, with scooped mids and crunchy clipping"6, and MusicRadar's reviewer heard an op-amp Big Muff vibe in the same mode5. The difference is that the Fundamental Fuzz wraps that voice in a three-mode pedal: a gated, starved fuzz on one side and a mid-boosted, band-friendly voice on the other, neither of which a stock Muff offers.

The Fundamental series

Every Fundamental pedal shares the same layout: three faders for tweaking the sound and a three-way switch for changing modes8. The series later grew with the Fundamental Ambient, an expansive reverb with three atmospheric modes, Deep, Lush and Haze, added in 20249.

Within the series, the bypass types split by effect type. The Drive, Distortion, Fuzz and Tremolo are true bypass, while the Chorus, Phaser, Delay and Reverb use buffered bypass57.

The Fundamental Fuzz, Drive and Distortion are all listed by Walrus Audio as discontinued and no longer available2. If you find one new, it is likely remaining retailer or blemished stock.

Power and setup

What reviewers said

Guitar.com's big review of the Fundamental series found the Fuzz could be an ideal first fuzz, writing that "it might be the perfect entry into everything that makes the effect fun in one pint-sized package"10.

Josh Gardner, Guitar.com10

MusicRadar's reviewer found the Fuzz especially unapologetic, and reported that when gain stacking, the Classic mode's op-amp Big Muff vibe worked best with a Tumnus overdrive in front. The Mid+ mode didn't seem to live up to its name at first, but showed its merits in a band mix recording context5. Guitar World's reviewer praised the build feel of the series controls, noting of the sliders: "These feel nice and solid"7.

Blemished units

Walrus Audio sold blemished versions of Fundamental pedals at a discount. A blemish is cosmetic only, such as scratches or dents in the finish of the pedal, with the circuit and function unaffected1. The blemished Fundamental Fuzz was listed at $84.991.

Questions

Is the Walrus Audio Fundamental Fuzz discontinued?

Yes. Walrus Audio's product page states the pedal is discontinued and no longer available. The Fundamental Drive and Distortion are listed as discontinued too, and the blemished Chorus variant is sold out. Blemished Fundamental Fuzz units were listed at $84.99, but availability is not guaranteed.

Is the Fundamental Fuzz a Big Muff clone?

Not exactly, but reviewers heard a strong Muff connection. MusicRadar described the Classic mode as having an op-amp Big Muff vibe with a scooped midrange, and Delicious Audio called it a classic fuzz sound reminiscent of the Muff with scooped mids and crunchy clipping. It is a three-mode fuzz rather than a straight copy.

Is the Walrus Fundamental Fuzz true bypass?

Yes. Walrus Audio lists true bypass for the Fundamental Fuzz, and both MusicRadar and Guitar World confirm it. Within the Fundamental series, the Drive, Distortion, Fuzz and Tremolo are true bypass, while the Chorus, Phaser, Delay and Reverb use buffered bypass.

What power supply does the Fundamental Fuzz need?

It runs on 9V DC with a 100mA minimum, and Walrus Audio lists a 100mA current draw. A power supply is not included, daisy chain supplies are not recommended on the series, and Walrus recommends an isolated power supply for all its pedals.

What is a blemished Walrus Audio pedal?

A blemished unit is a pedal with cosmetic flaws only, such as scratches or dents in the finish. Walrus Audio sold blemished Fundamental pedals at a discount, with the blemished Fundamental Fuzz listed at $84.99. The electronics and function are unaffected.
