The Plainsman Dual Stage Clean Boost is a guitar effects pedal from Walrus Audio, a maker of pedals for electric guitar and bass. As its name says, it is a boost pedal with two stages, designed to raise the level of a signal without changing its character.1
A clean boost sits at the simplest end of the gain family, which also includes overdrive, distortion and fuzz: where those pedals shape the tone and add clipping, a clean boost is meant to turn the volume up and leave the sound otherwise alone. Players typically use one to push an amp harder, to lift a solo above a band, or to drive other pedals on the board.1
The dual stage design
What sets this version of the Plainsman apart from a single-stage boost is that it offers two stages rather than one. Two stages give a player more gain on tap than a single-stage circuit, and they can be used to push an amp or another pedal harder than a one-stage design.1
Walrus Audio has also made single-stage versions of the Plainsman. If you are comparing the two, the dual stage is the version with two boost stages; see the Walrus Audio Plainsman and Walrus Audio Plainsman Clean Boost pages for those.
Where it sits in Walrus Audio's range
The Plainsman Dual Stage Clean Boost is one of several boost pedals Walrus Audio has produced. The company's later boost designs include the Walrus Audio Emissary, a parallel dual boost, and the Walrus Audio DEFCON4, an EQ and boost pedal. The dual-stage idea also appears in the Walrus Audio Emissary Parallel Boost.1
