The Wampler Belle is a low-gain overdrive pedal from Wampler, designed by Brian Wampler1. It takes a classic low-gain overdrive circuit, the Nobels ODR-1, and reworks it in a mini enclosure with extra controls: a Bass knob and a side switch that changes the clipping diodes12. Wampler describes the sound the original circuit delivers as "a firm favorite in Nashville," and the Belle is the company's take on it1.

Pete Thorn, demoing the pedal on his YouTube channel, called it a "transparent natural overdrive" and noted the mini format fits on just about any pedalboard3.

A low-gain overdrive in the Nashville tradition

Wampler's own description of the Belle says Brian Wampler "has taken a classic low gain overdrive circuit and tweaked it to perfection," adding that the pedal that inspired the circuit has been around a long time in various forms, but most versions of it have too much of a "Hi Fi" sound1. To the original circuit he added further gain capabilities and a Bass control, and the result is a drive with high quality components in a small enclosure1.

On the character of the sound, reviewers put the Belle among the smooth, low-gain drives. Pete Thorn described it as having "that smooth, is it distorted is it not" quality, in the same category as the Timmy or Jan Ray, usable from a colored clean boost up to fat clarity on single notes without sounding heavily overdriven3. He demoed it into the normal channel of a Top Hat King Royale, an AC30-style amp3.

Delicious Audio found the two ends of the control range useful in different ways: with gain low and the bass control up high, "you get a wonderful clean boost sound that can rival any Klone circuit," while spinning the bass down and the gain all the way up yields "an awesome transparent overdrive / medium distortion sound with all the crunch you need"5.

The controls

The Belle has five controls: Level, Gain, Color, Bass, and the Compression Clipping Switch on the side1.

ControlWhat it does
LevelSets output volume; with Gain, it "does exactly what you'd expect"2
GainSets the amount of drive2
ColorBoosts or cuts the high and low end a little while leaving the midrange frequencies alone12
BassAlters the harmonics from smooth and creamy to tight and crunchy1
Compression Clipping Switch (side)Changes the clipping diodes: pressed in is more open sounding, out is more compressed and crunchy2

The Color control is more than a standard tone control. Wampler says dialing it right or left will either boost or cut the high and low end a little, but the midrange frequencies are left well alone1. In Sweetwater's demo video, Don Carr explained that the Color control "leaves the mids alone and fine tunes the high and low end simultaneously," and that the Bass control is voiced to work with it, adding lows to fatten a lower-gain sound or cutting lows to tighten up a higher-gain setting2.

The Bass control is the notable addition over the original circuit. Wampler says it "alters the harmonics from smooth and creamy to tight and crunchy"1, and Delicious Audio describes it as shaping the harmonics across that same range5.

The side switch

The push switch on the side is something Brian Wampler added to the classic circuit of the original pedal3. Wampler says it controls the amount of compression and alters the clipping structure in the circuit for some extra punch1. In practice, as Don Carr demonstrated in Sweetwater's demo, "the button on the side changes the clipping diodes with the button pressed in it's more open sounding and with the button" out, more compressed and crunchy2. Wampler's own wording for the two positions: disengaged (out) for more compression, engaged (in) for a more open sound1.

Based on the Nobels ODR-1

The circuit behind the Belle is the Nobels ODR-1, an overdrive first released in 199267. Guitar World's launch coverage guessed as much at the time, calling the inspiration "old session favorite, the Nobels ODR-1"8, and Guitar Pedal X later described the Belle outright as Wampler's "2020 Belle Overdrive mini-take of the ODR-1"4. Pete Thorn called it "that other green overdrive, the one that became super popular in Nashville"3.

The ODR-1 itself is designed in Germany and made in China9. Its 30th Anniversary Gold edition has a control topology that Guitar Pedal X judged "pretty much identical in control topology to Wampler's Belle Overdrive"6, and MusicRadar summed up the relationship from the buyer's side: the Belle "is a Nobels with some added controls and features"10.

What Wampler added over the stock ODR-1 is the Bass control, the extra gain capabilities, and the side compression/clipping switch13.

How it compares and where it sits

Against the MXR Timmy, Pete Thorn found "some similar characteristics but the Belle to me has more presence, it's like just got this open, really nice" clarity on the top end3. Both sit in the smooth, transparent low-gain category alongside the Jan Ray3.

At launch, the Belle was only available from Sweetwater in the USA and Thomann in Europe8, priced at $149.9711. Both the Belle and the Plexi-Drive Mini were built in the company's USA facility and can run on 9 to 18 volts12.

The Belle has no battery connector inside, so it requires an external 9v to 18v power supply1. Its draw of 11.4mA at 9v and 14.1mA at 18v1 is modest, but the absence of a battery option is worth knowing before you build a board around it.

Reviewer and demo videos

Pete Thorn's demo covers the pedal's range from colored clean boost to fat single-note clarity, its comparison with the Timmy, and the side switch, run into an AC30-style amp3.

Questions

Does the Wampler Belle take a battery?

No. The pedal has a 9v to 18v power jack but no battery connector inside, so it needs an external power supply. Wampler lists its power draw as between 11.4mA at 9v and 14.1mA at 18v, which is light enough for most isolated pedalboard supplies.

Is the Wampler Belle true bypass?

Yes. Wampler's product page lists the Belle Overdrive as true bypass, so with the pedal disengaged your signal passes through without the circuit coloring it.

What does the side switch on the Wampler Belle do?

The side push switch changes the clipping diodes in the circuit. With the button pressed in the pedal is more open sounding; with it out the sound is more compressed and crunchy. Wampler describes it as controlling the amount of compression and altering the clipping structure for extra punch.

How does the Wampler Belle compare to an MXR Timmy?

In his demo, Pete Thorn put the Belle in the same category as the Timmy and Jan Ray, pedals with a smooth, borderline-clean drive character. He found the two share some characteristics, but said the Belle has more presence and open clarity on the top end.

Where is the Wampler Belle made?

Wampler builds the Belle in the USA. The company says each product bearing its Built in USA logo is custom designed and assembled in the USA using premium globally sourced components chosen for sound and response.
