The Wampler Ego 76 is a compressor pedal from Wampler, designed by Brian Wampler as his take on the Urei 1176 Peak Limiter, the studio compressor he calls "the iconic studio compressor that has shaped the fabric of music over the decades"1. Where most pedal compressors are variations on guitar-amp-era designs, the Ego 76 is built around FET (field-effect transistor) technology, the same gain-reduction element that gives the 1176 its character, and Guitar World reported that its "electrical guts mirror that of the 1176's in great detail"2.

Wampler's own framing is that the pedal is about enhancement rather than squashing: "The Ego 76 isn't about squashing your signal; it's about enhancing it"1. It lists at $199.972, and a smaller sibling, the Mini Ego 76, followed in October 202512.

What it does: 1176-style FET compression in a pedal

The Ego 76 translates the behavior of a studio FET limiter into a stompbox. MusicRadar described it as "a stompbox inspired by the legendary 1176 Peak Limiter"3, and Guitar Pedal X called it "Brian Wampler's EGO76 is his UREI 1176 FET Studio Compressor" in pedal form, noting that it "gives you a full range of features while keeping the pedal as simple and straightforward as possible"4.

The practical difference for a player is in the controls. A typical guitar compressor gives you sustain and attack at best; the Ego 76 carries over the 1176's studio vocabulary of separate Attack and Release controls alongside a compression amount knob, so you can shape how the pedal grabs and lets go of a note the way an engineer would on a console. Wampler says the pedal "transcends the conventional role of a pedal compressor, moving beyond merely squishing your signal" to enriching the tone56.

The pedal sits in Wampler's compressor line as its third design. Guitar Pedal X placed it "after its Ross-inspired original EGO, then the enhanced and evolved Cory Wong Compressor"7, and Delicious Audio noted it is "built on the solid foundation of the Ego compressor"8.

The controls

The full-size Ego 76 has six controls4:

ControlWhat it does
CompressAdjusts how much compression is applied to your signal; tuned to work similarly to the Ratio control on a 11763
AttackStudio-level attack setting, controlling how quickly the compression engages
ReleaseStudio-level release setting, controlling how quickly the compression lets go
LevelAdjusts the overall output volume3
BlendMixes compressed signal with your dry signal; also found on the original Ego8
ToneAdds brightness, which Wampler says captures "the 1176's famed energy"1

Blending dry signal back in preserves pick attack and dynamics while the compressed side fattens the sustain, which is what makes the pedal usable as an always-on tone tool rather than a pure limiter.

The enclosure is a premium chameleon sapphire finish with aluminum controls1.

Power

The Ego 76 runs on 9V DC and draws 20mA, with a battery connection and a 9V power jack1. Wampler's warning is explicit: do not exceed 9V DC1, so the pedal is not one to feed from an 18V supply the way some compressors allow.

The Mini Ego 76 drops the battery connection and runs from a 9V power jack only, at the same 20mA draw6. If you are choosing between the two, only the full-size pedal takes a battery.

History and versions

Guitar World quoted Brian Wampler calling the Ego 76 "my personal tribute to the iconic studio compressor," and "a journey into the soul of timeless studio tones"21. Wampler's own product page and Guitar World both list it at $199.9712, the current maker price, while MusicRadar's launch coverage gave it as £219 / $2253.

In October 2025 Wampler released the Mini Ego 76, which Guitar Pedal X described as shrinking "the EGO 76 Compressor into a Mini Edition"9. The Mini keeps the FET-based circuit and the Level, Blend and Compress knobs, but replaces the Attack and Release knobs with two three-way switches "providing selectable Attack and Release settings, based on classic studio configurations"10. It is designed as an always-on pedal in a miniature format10, carries the same chameleon sapphire finish6, and is built in the U.S.A. with a limited 5-year warranty10.

How it differs from the original Ego

The original Wampler Ego is a Ross-inspired compressor with five controls: volume, sustain, attack, tone and blend. The Ego 76 keeps the Blend concept but changes the underlying design to the 1176 model, with FET-based circuitry and dedicated Attack and Release controls in place of a single sustain knob14. Wampler also offers the Mini Ego, a compact version of the original Ross-style design with internal switches for tone and attack, which predates the Mini Ego 76 by nearly a decade.

On Wampler's product page, player Jim Stahlhut, listed as a verified owner, describes using both sizes: "I use the mini in the front of one pedal board and the regular on my second pedal board as a limiter" at the end of the chain1.

Questions

Does the Wampler Ego 76 take a battery?

Yes. The full-size Ego 76 has a battery connection as well as a 9V power jack. The Mini Ego 76, like Wampler's earlier Mini Ego, is built for a smaller enclosure and runs from a 9V power jack only, with no battery connector inside.

Is the Wampler Ego 76 true bypass?

Yes. Wampler lists the Ego 76 with 3PDT true bypass switching, so the pedal is fully out of the signal path when disengaged. The Mini Ego 76 is positioned as an always-on pedal, so bypass matters less if you leave it on permanently.

What is the difference between the Ego 76 and the Mini Ego 76?

The Mini Ego 76 (released October 2025) shrinks the Ego 76 into a miniature format. The full-size pedal has six knobs including Attack and Release; the Mini keeps Level, Blend and Compress knobs but moves Attack and Release to two three-way switches based on classic studio configurations. Both are FET-based and built in the USA.

How is the Ego 76 different from the original Wampler Ego compressor?

The original Ego is a Ross-inspired design with volume, sustain, attack, tone and blend controls. The Ego 76 is instead modeled on the Urei 1176 Peak Limiter, with FET-based circuitry and studio-style Attack and Release controls. Both share the Blend knob, which lets you mix compressed and dry signal.

Where is the Wampler Ego 76 made?

Wampler states that both the Ego 76 and the Mini Ego 76 are built in the U.S.A. The full-size pedal carries a limited 5-year warranty, and the Mini Ego 76 is sold with a limited 5-year warranty through wamplerpedals.com and authorized dealers worldwide.
