The Way Huge Havalina Germanium Fuzz is a three-transistor germanium fuzz pedal from Way Huge Electronics, the fuzz-focused brand owned by Dunlop Manufacturing. It was designed around hand-selected Russian germanium transistors and a passive tone circuit, and Guitar World reported it as shipping in March 2014, with an MSRP of $171.41 at the time of its announcement1. MusicRadar's reviewer Trevor Curwen described it as "a three-transistor germanium-powered fuzz box inspired by a vintage 1960s design"2.

A germanium fuzz in the Tone Bender vein

The Havalina sits in the lineage of the vintage Tone Bender fuzzes of the 1960s without copying one outright. Curwen's verdict for MusicRadar was that "it's essentially a pedal in the Tone Bender vein, but not a clone," summing it up as "A new flavour of Tone Bender-style fuzz - but a tasty one nonetheless!"2. Pedal of the Day heard the same ancestry, finding "a hint of old-school Tone Bender fuzz sound" within it4.

Part of that character comes from the tone stage. The pedal uses a vintage style passive tone circuit, which Pedal of the Day described as making it "gritty but smooth and buttery at the same time"4. Germanium transistors are the other half: they are the component that gave the original 1960s fuzz boxes their voice, and the Havalina's are individually hand-selected2.

The controls: Volume, Tone and Fuzz

The Havalina is a three-knob unit2. Pedal of the Day found that adjusting the Volume, Tone and Fuzz controls produces a wide array of fuzziness, ranging from a mellow sonic crunch to what the reviewer called a swarm of bees-type fuzz4.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeSets the pedal's output level4
TonePassive tone circuit; covers a wide range and gets sizzly in the top end2
FuzzLower settings give overdriven tones; turned up for nice thick fuzz2

The fuzz knob's lower range is where the pedal leans toward drive sounds. Curwen noted that "The Havalina offers a range of overdriven tones at lower settings of the fuzz knob, but you can turn it up for nice thick" fuzz2. Pedal of the Day put the same finding another way: you can coax great tones that lean towards a more overdriven sound, then crank up the Fuzz dial, and the pedal is not designed for wild, uncontrolled, 8-bit-type chaos, being better suited to vintage and overdriven-leaning fuzz tones4.

"It cleans up wonderfully from your volume control, with a complete range of expression straight from your guitar."
Trevor Curwen, MusicRadar2

That cleanup behavior is a hallmark players look for in germanium fuzz: rolling back the guitar's volume knob tames the fuzz into quieter, cleaner textures without touching the pedal. Curwen's review singles it out as a strength2.

"this is a fun fuzz that will get you groovin' with fat, vintage tones to rock your amp and your face"

Pedal and parts set versions

The Havalina has existed in two forms: as a finished effects pedal3 and as an electronic parts set. Dunlop sells the parts version as the "WAY HUGE® HAVALINA™ GERMANIUM FUZZ - PARTS," a Germanium fuzz parts set for a guitar effects pedal, under model code WHE403-PARTS56.

The parts set is sold as electronic components with a qualified technician in mind. Dunlop states that if you do not have experience installing electronic parts, installation or repair should be performed by a qualified technician5. It is not a ready-to-play pedal. Dunlop also sells parts sets for other Way Huge fuzzes, including the Way Huge Russian Pickle Fuzz Parts and Way Huge Smalls Russian-Pickle Fuzz Parts.

As a finished pedal, the Havalina is built to pedalboard duty. Curwen's review describes it as "Smartly finished in anodised aluminium, this robustly put-together pedal deserves a spot on hard-working pedalboards"2. MusicRadar's review also noted the street price at the time as less than £100, calling getting something similar for that price sound indeed2.

Where it sits in the Way Huge fuzz range

The Havalina is one of several fuzzes in the Way Huge line designed by Jeorge Tripps4. Others include the Swollen Pickle Jumbo Fuzz MkIIS, the Russian-Pickle MkIII, the Stone Burner Sub Atomic Fuzz and the Smalls Doom Hammer Fuzz. Where the Swollen Pickle family covers heavier, more adjustable modern fuzz, the Havalina's germanium three-transistor design and passive tone circuit put it on the vintage side of the range, closer to the Tone Bender tradition than to op-amp or silicon designs.
