The Wren and Cuff Anna is a dual pedal built around one player's rig: Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria uses an 80s Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive feeding his 1978 op-amp Big Muff, and the Anna puts that combination in a single enclosure as two independent effects, an overdrive side based on the SD-1 circuit and a fuzz side based on his late 70s op-amp Big Muff1. Wren and Cuff describes the result as "a Swiss Army knife of fuzz and drive"1.
Where it came from
The Anna was released in 2022 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Coheed and Cambria's 2002 album The Second Stage Turbine Blade, and its artwork celebrates that album12. It is a pedal dedicated to one of Claudio Sanchez's favorite and most trusted combinations when in the studio and on the stage1. On the design side, the collaboration leaned on Matt Holl's reputation as Wren and Cuff owner for meticulously accurate reproductions of vintage pedals1. The Muff side was left untouched, a detailed replica created at the Wren and Cuff shop of Claudio's original pedal2.
"Claudio's '78 had the 'tone bypass' mod the '78's are known for, so that of course was included via a toggle switch"
The two sides
The overdrive side is a pure overdrive based on a Boss SD-1 circuit2. The fuzz side is a two-control Muff circuit, and the Anna adds a bypass switch for it, so the two effects can be run separately or stacked2. Wren and Cuff is neither endorsed nor affiliated with Roland Corporation (Boss effects), Electro-Harmonix, or Ibanez Guitars; those product names are used only for reference1.
Drive side controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Four position rotary switch | Changes the clipping section of the drive side1 |
| Toggle switch | Flips between the stock setting and an SD-1 on steroids, with more gain, thicker tone and more output1 |
The rotary switch's four positions, as Wren and Cuff describes them1:
- Stock vintage SD-1 style setting
- LED clip option: hard edge symmetrical clipping
- No clipping diodes: big, loud, open sounding sorta-clean boost
- TS setting: gets in the ballpark of a stock Tube Screamer
Muff side
The tone bypass toggle on the Muff side matches the mod on Claudio's 1978 Big Muff1. Players who want that op-amp circuit on its own can look at the Wren and Cuff Eye See '78, and the fuzz page covers the wider Big Muff family Wren and Cuff builds.
The Anna Compact
A couple of years after the original Anna, the idea came about of doing a smaller version, and the result is the Anna Compact, a V2 Claudio Sanchez signature pedal2. The Compact is primarily an overdrive pedal with an added fuzz circuit2: it keeps the two-control Muff circuit with a bypass switch, plus mini-knobs for the fuzz and shifted drive controls2. It runs true-bypass operation and takes a 2.1mm barrel connector with minus tip, the common effects pedal type2.
The original Anna is sold out as of October 20261. The Anna Compact is the version currently described on Wren and Cuff's site2.

Questions
What pedals is the Wren and Cuff Anna based on?
The Anna combines two pedals from Claudio Sanchez's rig: an 80s Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive feeding his 1978 op-amp Big Muff. The overdrive side is based on the SD-1 circuit, and the fuzz side is a detailed replica of his late 70s op-amp Big Muff, built at the Wren and Cuff shop. The tone bypass toggle on the Muff side matches the mod his own 1978 unit is known for.
Who designed the Wren and Cuff Anna?
The Anna was a collaboration between Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria and Matt Holl, the owner of Wren and Cuff. Holl has a reputation for meticulously accurate reproductions of vintage pedals, and the Muff side was created at the Wren and Cuff shop as a detailed replica of Sanchez's original pedal.
Is the Wren and Cuff Anna still in production?
No. The original Anna is listed as sold out on Wren and Cuff's product page as of October 2026. A smaller version, the Anna Compact, was developed a couple of years after the original as a primarily overdrive-focused take on the same idea.
What do the clipping settings on the drive side do?
A four position rotary switch changes the clipping section of the drive side. The settings are a stock vintage SD-1 style setting, an LED clip option with hard edge symmetrical clipping, a no-clipping-diodes mode described as a big, loud, open sounding sorta-clean boost, and a TS setting that gets in the ballpark of a stock Tube Screamer.
What does the tone bypass toggle do?
The tone bypass toggle sits on the Muff side and matches the tone bypass mod that Claudio Sanchez's 1978 Big Muff carries, a modification the 1978 units are known for. It lets the player switch the tone section out of the circuit, in the same way as on Sanchez's original pedal.
