The Zoom G2X FOUR is a compact multi-effects and amp emulator for six-string guitar, built around a built-in expression pedal. Zoom says the pedal covers "volume swells, wah and more," which is the main thing that separates it from its sibling, the G2 FOUR, in the same series1. Guitar World reported the introduction of the six-string focused G2 Four and G2X Four as part of Zoom's FOUR-series multi-effects line2.
The expression pedal
The expression pedal is the G2X FOUR's defining feature. Zoom's product page states: "The G2X FOUR comes with an expression pedal for volume swells, wah and more"1. For a player, that means the onboard pedal can be put in front of the effects for volume, or rocked to sweep a wah filter, without carrying a separate expression pedal or a wah on the board. The same pedal arrangement appears on the smaller G1X FOUR in Zoom's range.
Guitar.com's reviewer, Cillian Breathnach, described the pedal's feel and finish in the April 2023 review:
"This is, for some reason, covered in the same cheap-looking faux carbon fibre wrap as the rest of the pedal, meaning its"5
The review goes on to describe an almost entirely friction-free surface and a relatively stiff action5, which is worth knowing if you plan to ride the pedal for volume swells.
Presets and effects
Zoom preloads the G2X FOUR with 250 presets. The maker describes these patches as "designed to recreate the evolution of guitar tone," with each patch recreating the sound of an iconic song from the 50's to today4. The series also carries Zoom's Multi-Layer IR (impulse response) tech, which Guitar World notes featured on the B6 and G2 Four2.
Size and where it sits in the range
The G2X FOUR measures 24cm x 14cm x 7cm, against 17cm x 14cm x 7cm for the G2 FOUR, the extra depth coming from the expression pedal5. Zoom's guitarist Yotam Silberstein is shown playing through the G2X Four on the maker's product page4.
The G2X FOUR is the expression-pedal version of the G2 FOUR. If you do not need onboard wah or volume control, the G2 FOUR is the smaller and less expensive unit of the pair5.
