The Kurzweil Mangler is a single-space (1U) rack effects processor that Kurzweil positions as one of its two low-cost effects processors. It is built on the KDFX effects technology found in the Kurzweil KSP8 and K2600, and it focuses on effects other than, but not excluding, reverb: chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, rotary speaker, panner, delay, filters, LaserVerb, Pitcher, synth trigger, ring mod, distortion and compression, plus many combinations of these1. Kurzweil lists it as a Legacy Model, so it is no longer a current product1.

For a guitar player, the Mangler is a way to put a full studio-style effects engine in one rack space: 192 ROM presets with up to 44 editable parameters each, a 3-band parametric global EQ, and EQ and/or FX bypass reachable from a front panel button or an external pedal1.

What it does: KDFX effects in a single rack space

Kurzweil describes the Mangler as based on the KDFX technology found in the KSP8 and K26001. KDFX is the effects system that originated in the Kurzweil K2600 synthesizer; the KSP8 extended that algorithm arsenal into a standalone 2-space rack unit with 249 expandable DSP algorithms2. The Mangler packages a subset of that engine in a 1U chassis at a lower price point1.

The effect list covers most of what a pedalboard would, in one box1:

  • Modulation: chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, rotary speaker, panner
  • Time: delay, LaserVerb
  • Pitch and synth: Pitcher, synth trigger, ring mod
  • Tone shaping: filters, distortion, compression
  • Many combinations of the above

A 3-band parametric global EQ sits across the output, and the unit can run in stereo or mono input configurations1. Compared with the KSP8, the Mangler is the smaller sibling: the KSP8 is a 2-space rack unit with internal universal switching AC power and 8-channel metering, while the Mangler is 1U, uses an external supply, and trims the feature set to a single stereo signal path12.

The controls and display

The front panel is built around a 2×20 character LCD with a front panel contrast knob, so editing happens through a text menu rather than a graphic display1. Signal levels are watched with 3-LED input metering plus an output clip LED1.

Editing and performance controls include1:

  • Display: 2×20 character LCD with contrast knob
  • Metering: 3-LED input signal level metering, output clip LED
  • Presets: 192 ROM presets, 64 user locations
  • Editing: Up to 44 editable parameters per preset
  • Bypass: EQ and/or FX bypass via front panel button or external pedal
  • Tap tempo: Front panel button or external pedal input

Power and connections

The Mangler runs on an external 9.5VAC / 2A power supply1.

That is an AC supply, not the DC center-negative supply most guitar pedals use. It cannot be powered from a typical pedalboard power brick, and it needs its own outlet.

Connections on the unit1:

  • Audio in: Two balanced/unbalanced 1/4″ TRS jacks, stereo and mono input configurations
  • Digital: Stereo S/PDIF input and output; the input can slave to external sync
  • MIDI: In, Out (switchable to Thru)
  • Pedal: Single stereo jack for dual pedal units (Kurzweil does not sell a compatible pedal itself)
  • Sync: BPM sync via MIDI Clock; tap tempo via front panel button or external pedal

Up to 16 effects parameters can be controlled or modulated in real time over MIDI, which makes the unit deep for rack users who want continuous control of, say, a filter or delay parameter from a controller1.

History: KDFX from the KSP8 and K2600

The Mangler's engine traces back through Kurzweil's rack line. KDFX began as the effects system inside the Kurzweil K2600 synthesizer; the KSP8 rack unit extended those algorithms into a standalone processor with 249 expandable DSP algorithms2. The Mangler then brought the same KDFX technology into a single-space rack chassis at an affordable price1. Kurzweil's documentation dates the Mangler's Owner's Manual to May 21, 2003, with a Supplemental Reference following on July 19, 20031.

Hard reset and maintenance

A hard reset returns the Mangler to its factory state. Kurzweil gives two methods1:

  1. Press MASTER, turn the parameter select knob until "Hard Reset?" is displayed, press Load, then press Tap.
  2. Boot Loader method: hold Load and Store while restarting, turn the Select knob three clicks clockwise, then press Load and Tap.

Hard resetting will erase all user memory. Back up any custom data via sys-ex before proceeding1.

Questions

How do I hard reset a Kurzweil Mangler?

Press MASTER, turn the parameter select knob until "Hard Reset?" appears, then press Load and Tap. There is also a Boot Loader method: hold Load and Store while restarting, turn the Select knob three clicks clockwise, then press Load and Tap. A hard reset erases all user memory, so back up any custom data via sys-ex first.

What power supply does the Kurzweil Mangler use?

It runs on an external 9.5VAC / 2A power supply. That is an AC supply, not the 9V DC center-negative wall wart most guitar pedals use, so it cannot be powered from a typical pedalboard power brick.

Does the Kurzweil Mangler have tap tempo?

Yes. Tempo can be tapped from a front panel button or from an external pedal connected to the pedal input. Time-based effects can also be synced to incoming MIDI Clock.

What expression pedal works with the Kurzweil Mangler?

The Mangler uses a single stereo jack designed for dual pedal units, and Kurzweil does not sell a compatible pedal itself. Any dual-pedal unit wired for this scheme can drive the EQ and FX bypass and other assignable functions.

Does the Mangler have S/PDIF?

Yes. It has a stereo S/PDIF input and output, and the input can slave to an external sync source. Converters run at 24 bit with 128x oversampling, and sample rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz are supported.
