Ampeg

11 pedals on Tonebox

Ampeg is a bass amplification brand whose trademark is held by Yamaha. Ampeg's own product pages state that "Ampeg is a trademark or registered trademark of Yamaha Corporation in the U.S. and/or other jurisdictions"1, and a Godlyke listing likewise names Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc. as the registered trademark holder for Ampeg and Scrambler2. The brand's current pedal range is built around bass preamps, DI boxes and overdrive, with the SCR-DI as its flagship stompbox.

The pedal line

Ampeg's pedals are aimed first at bass players. The SCR-DI is described by Ampeg as "a full-featured Ampeg preamp" with the Scrambler Bass Overdrive built in1. The SGT-DI is a bass preamp and DI that Ampeg says "gives modern bassists an entire rig in a single stompbox," including a foot-switchable 3-band EQ with sweepable mids4.

The line also includes standalone effects. The Scrambler Bass Overdrive is a bass overdrive pedal that Ampeg says "infuses your sound with authentic Ampeg grit, grind, and sag"5, and the Opto Comp is an analog optical compressor that Ampeg describes as using "an optical circuit to deliver smooth, vintage-style compression"5. The Opto Comp is not marketed as bass-only, but the preamp and DI pedals in the range are bass products.

The Scrambler name

The Scrambler name goes back decades. The Scrambler SCP-OD is based on the original cosmetic design of the Ampeg Scrambler pedal from 19696, so the current overdrive pedals carry the look of a late-1960s Ampeg original.

Manuals and support

Ampeg keeps a discontinued-products page on its site for older gear. Products listed there have documentation available, and Ampeg is direct about the limits of the archive3:

"If your product is not listed here, it is likely that no documentation was ever digitized or passed down from previous owners3."

Ampeg support page3

For current pedals, an English owner's manual for the SCR-DI is available as a PDF download7.

If an old Ampeg product does not appear on the discontinued-products support page, Ampeg says it is likely no documentation was ever digitized or passed down, so there may be no manual to find3.
