4 pedals on Tonebox

DryBell is a small guitar effects company located in Croatia1. It is known for its Vibe Machine series of Uni-Vibe style pedals and the Unit67, a compact pedal combining compression, EQ and clean boost1. Every pedal ships from the company's own workshop in Croatia, and orders include a handwritten thank you note, a personal touch that customers single out as unusual12.

The Vibe Machine series

DryBell built its reputation on vibe pedals. Delicious Audio described the company in 2018 as "laser focused on vibe pedals"2, and the Vibe Machine series has been called "the world's first smallest vibe pedal," producing classic analog Uni-Vibe sounds5. The series runs from the V-1 Vibe Machine through the V-2 to the current V-3, a compact photocell-based pedal3.

The V-2 is a pedal with analog circuitry using the photocell methodology of the original Uni-Vibe, with controls for depth of modulation, tone and input impedance62. Reviewing it for MusicRadar, Trevor Curwen wrote:

"In fact, it's probably the most versatile of all the Uni-Vibe type pedals out there6."

The V-3 is an updated photocell-based version with a revised EQ function. DryBell says the pedal now modulates without changing the EQ, sounding roomier with more depth3. Users of the series include Steve Stevens, Joe Satriani, Joanne Shaw Taylor and Joe Perry3.

The Unit67

The Unit67 is a compact pedal that combines an equalizer (Low and High, including a Rangemaster style treble boost "Range" control), compression and clean boost, and it also serves as a pedalboard buffer789. Its compressor section is a low noise circuit developed by DryBell itself, inspired by the design of the Urei 1176 rack compressor10. The pedal was intensively developed for two or more years before release1, and it comes in a standard silver version and a Red Edition11. Richard Fortus uses it as a compressor/boost pedal in his Guns N' Roses rig12.

Other pedals: The Engine and Module 4

Beyond vibe and compression pedals, the range includes The Engine, an overdrive/preamp and boost pedal with two channels and dual controls, made in Croatia138. Reviewing it for Guitar.com, Richard Purvis called it "quite possibly the classiest example yet" among Marshall-in-a-box pedals13. The newest pedal is the Module 4, a compact compressor that also ships from the Croatian workshop144. Bjørn Riis of Airbag carries The Engine and Module 4 on his 2024 pedalboard15.

The R&D team: Zvonch, Kruno and Kiki

DryBell's research and development team has three members: Zvonch, Kruno and Kiki, with Kiki described as the team's new engineer4. On the Unit67, Kruno, with his ear and years of playing experience, worked closely with Zvonch to perfect the Range control7.

Artists

DryBell's artist roster includes several well known players:

  • Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), who uses both the Vibe Machine and the Unit679
  • Joe Perry (Aerosmith), who uses a Unit67 and two Vibe Machines on his main rig16
  • Brad Whitford (Aerosmith)17
  • Richard Fortus (Guns N' Roses), a long time Unit67 user12
  • Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), who said of the Vibe Machine: "I LOVE the Vibe Machine so much. It is, by far, the best sounding and most versatile vibe pedal I've had the experience of using."18
  • Rex Brown (Pantera), who told DryBell "The Unit67 is on every pedalboard I use!!"19
