Horrothia Releases Triage Discrete Transistor Preamp

The Horrothia Triage is a discrete transistor pre-amplifier that works as both a front-end preamp and an overdrive, according to Delicious Audio, which published its coverage on August 2, 2023¹. Pedal of the Day had described it as Horrothia FX's latest release in a post dated January 30, 2023².

The circuit is an all-transistor, ground-up Horrothia design. A JFET preamp, followed by an internal clean-level trimmer, feeds an overdrive stage built around a transistor-based discrete opamp, with no chip ICs¹². Delicious Audio reports that the pedal is born from the company's low-gain overdrive Teeth, with which it shares some circuit and tonal similarities; the maker says elements of the circuits are similar but the Triage "dwells on the wet side of the Teeth's design"¹².

The overdrive stage has a Mid Peak switch. With it off, the Triage acts as a full range boost; with it on, Delicious Audio says it delivers a Tubescreamer-style mid bump¹. An HF knob cuts or boosts high frequencies, and with Mid Peak off and HF centered the pedal acts as a full range boost¹. The maker says the pedal suits bass and acoustic as well as electric guitar¹².
