Peterson has released the StroboStomp EVH, a signature tuner for Eddie Van Halen, in a red, white and black striped enclosure12. The pedal is based on the StroboStomp HD and is available now in the US for $179123.
The tuner carries 13 exclusive EVH "Sweetener" presets calibrated to the tunings used across Van Halen's 1978 debut album, plus 11 companion presets for four-string bass123. Peterson says the album was tracked in Eb standard with the guitars sitting just above it almost throughout, with one exception that is slightly flat14. Some tracks use two presets, for different guitars or different song sections, and the deviations amount to quarter and eighth tone offsets applied string by string24. Beyond those, the pedal holds over 158 Sweetened and Guided Tunings, and users can create unlimited presets on the pedal or through the Peterson Connect app234. Firmware updates go through a micro USB port, not USB-C2.
The display is a 417-segment HD LCD with a variable color LED backlight, which Peterson describes as the largest tuning display it has put into a pedal tuner45. The red backlight is a nod to the company's classic tuners, and the color is configurable2. Switching offers relay-based true bypass or a buffered mode, and the output mutes during tuning2. Accuracy is ±0.1 cent, the note range runs from C0 to A#8, the reference A is adjustable from 390 to 490 Hz, and transposition covers -6 to +5 semitones23. The stainless steel body measures 129 x 66 x 54 mm and weighs 408 g2. Power comes from an optional 9V DC supply at roughly 85 mA, and a 9V battery is included23.
"The entire album was cut in Eb Standard and the guitars sit just above it almost throughout, with one exception which is slightly flat. Some tracks used two presets either for different guitars or different song sections. The differences amount to quarter and eighth tone deviations from standard E flat tuning with each string individually offset by a precise amount."
