JHS Pedals released a limited-edition run of its JHS Germanium Boost on 12 December, a single-knob boost built around OC71 germanium transistors, and the run sold out the same day12. The pedal launched at 5PM UK time1.
The Germanium Boost is a boost pedal in the lineage of the Dallas Rangemaster, the amp-top unit that guitarists used to drive their amps harder1. JHS describes it as a faithful recreation of the Rangemaster, with modern updates3. It has a footswitch, a single dial controlling gain, and a toggle switch that selects between a classic voicing and a thicker, more contemporary mode12. The metal enclosure is finished in a gray-green shade similar to many original Rangemasters1.
The transistors were, in JHS's words, sourced from a private stash in England13. The run was limited to 700 units1. The pedal was priced at $249123.
Sources differ on how quickly it sold out. MusicRadar reported that it sold out within the hour1. Guitar.com put the sellout at seven minutes2, and Delicious Audio also reported seven minutes, during a live broadcast3. MusicRadar noted that fake listings of the pedal had already appeared on Reverb at four-figure prices1.
JHS claims players will get "blistering, sustaining guitar in the same vein as We Will Rock You"13. Guitar.com reported that original Dallas Rangemaster units can sell for up to $4,0002.
