Subdecay announces Noise Theory parallel waveshaper fuzz pedal

May 1, 2024 · 3 sources

Subdecay has announced the Noise Theory, a fuzz pedal the maker describes as a "Parallel analog and digital fuzz"1. The pedal carries the SKU NT-1 and is listed at $199.00, with up to three days to ship1. Delicious Audio reported the launch on May 1, 20242.

The pedal offers "11 wave shaper fuzz types and 1 analog fuzz"1. An Edit Mode switch sets what the knobs control. In the Shaper position, Gain sets the overall gain of the waveshaper fuzz, Tone cuts treble as it is turned left, Offset controls bias or offset voltage for most fuzz types, and Select chooses the fuzz type3. Fuzz 0 and 1 are based on simple signal compression and clipping, Fuzz 2 through 9 are based on wave folding, and Fuzz 10 is an oscillator fuzz3. In the Analog position, the knobs control the analog fuzz gain, its tone and a Mix control that moves between the analog and waveshaper fuzz3. The maker says the analog fuzz was included because some shaper fuzzes can overload on intermodulation and harmonics, and mixing in analog fuzz "can help keep the chaos in check"3. A further set of controls covers pre-fuzz compression, a pre-fuzz high pass filter and a pre-fuzz low pass filter, plus an internal chorus/flanger with settings 1 through 103.

The pedal stores "11 savable presets"1. It has a 1/8 inch TRS type A MIDI input, and an adapter is not included3. The maker claims "Full MIDI control of all parameters"1 and says all parameters are controllable via MIDI in real time1. Connected to a MIDI controller, it can act as a "MIDI controlled 4 voice polyphonic synthesizer"1; the maker says 64 user preset patches and 64 factory preset patches are accessible via MIDI Program Change, with over 30 parameters editable via MIDI CC1.

Delicious Audio describes the pedal as combining an analog and a digital fuzz circuit in parallel, with 11 fuzz types, 1 analog and 10 digital2. It reports 11 onboard preset slots and "120+ via the editor," and says all of the pedal's "30+ parameters" can be controlled via MIDI2. It also mentions "a standalone free app for a more comfortable on-screen editing"2. The maker's product page does not mention an app or an editor1.

"Unconfined by 60's and 70s tradition, it embraces synth technology like wave folding and wave shaping distortions."
