Universal Audio released the UAFX Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amp on September 24, 2024, priced at $3991. Guitar World called it the company's "most ambitious pedal amp yet" and reported that it is inspired by the Dumble tube amps built by the late Alexander Dumble1. Gearnews reported that the press release describes it as a "D-Style" emulation2.
The pedal follows the form factor of earlier UAFX pedal amps. It has six knobs (three for EQ, plus volume, overdrive and output), three three-way switches and two footswitches for bypass and preset change2. Guitar World describes the switches as covering Cab and Tone options1. The left switch selects among three cabinet emulations, the middle switch sets the mode (ALT for secondary functions, AMP to set the virtual amplifier, STORE to save presets), and the right switch changes tonal character among rock, jazz and custom settings2.
The Enigmatic offers nine mic and speaker combinations1. Gearnews lists three cabs built in: a 1x12 Black GB25, a 2x12 Boutique D65 and a 2x12 Brute. The UAFX mobile app adds six more: a 4x12 UK V30, a 2x12 JBF120, a 1x12 Black EV12, a 4x12 Stripped GB, a 1x12 JBG125 and a 2x12 D-EV122. Connectivity includes a USB-C port for updates and app use, plus paired 1/4-inch inputs and outputs2.
Universal Audio said the pedal was made after it was given "exclusive access to numerous Overdrive Special" amps, and the company claims it has "perfectly captured" the sound and feel of custom Overdrive Special amps spanning 30 years1.
"With Enigmatic '82, we're giving players of all genres the evolving magic that made these amps so legendary with more customization than we've ever put in a UAFX pedal."
Guitar World reported the US price as $3991.
