AMT Electronics P1

The AMT Electronics P1 is a preamp pedal in AMT's Legend series, a line the maker groups under its "Metal" heading alongside the B1 and the P2¹. AMT describes the P1 as a preamp designed to run to an amp, meaning it takes the place of a guitar amp's front end and feeds the amp or power stage from there².

What it does

As a preamp, the P1 handles the tone-shaping work a player would normally expect from the front of an amplifier. AMT lists three main tone tools on the unit²⁵³:

• A parametric pre/post EQ, which can be placed before or after the preamp stage⁵
• Hi and low pass filters plus a Presence control³
• A noise gate, set globally rather than per preset²

The parametric EQ is the most flexible of these: unlike a simple bass-and-treble control, a parametric EQ lets the player choose both the center frequency and the amount of cut or boost, and AMT's listing of it as "pre/post" indicates it can sit either side of the core preamp circuit⁵. The hi and low pass filters trim the extremes of the spectrum at each end, and the Presence control shapes the upper range in the way a guitar amp's presence control does³. The global noise gate quiets the signal between notes, which matters most with high-gain preamp settings².
