Animals Pedal Relaxing Walrus Delay

The Relaxing Walrus Delay is a compact delay pedal from Animals Pedal, released on 26 August 2017¹. It has three controls, Blend, Repeat and Relax, and covers delay times from 1 to 500 ms, enough for doubling, short, medium and long delay²³.

Animals Pedal describes the delay tone as close to a vintage analog delay while also having the clarity of a digital delay²³⁴. The pedal also self-oscillates, meaning the repeats can be pushed into runaway feedback, a behavior players associate with classic analog delay circuits³.

What it does: analog-style repeats with digital clarity

The pedal's character, in the maker's words, sits between two delay traditions. Animals Pedal says the delay tone is close to a vintage analog delay while also having the clarity of a digital delay²³⁴. For a player, that means repeats with the warmth and darkening of an analog-style delay, but without the signal degradation that long analog delay chains can bring. The pedal also self-oscillates, so repeats pushed past their normal range build into feedback rather than simply fading out³.

The 1 to 500 ms delay time range covers the ground most players use day to day: doubling and slapback at the short end, medium delay for rhythm playing, and long delay for leads and ambient washes⁶.

The pedal descends from the earlier Ninevolt Pedals Relaxing Walrus, which Pedal of the Day described as a vintage-voiced analog delay⁷. The Animals Pedal version keeps the same name and control concept, and Animals Pedal describes its delay tone as close to vintage analog delay while also having the clarity of a digital delay²³⁴.

The controls: Relax, Repeat and Blend

Three knobs do all the work, and Animals Pedal calls them "necessary and sufficient," with no settings that leave you guessing². On the original Ninevolt Pedals version, Pedal of the Day described the same three controls in plainer terms: the Delay Time knob sets the delay time, Blend mixes wet and dry signals, and Repeats controls the echoes, from one to near infinite⁷.

The Relax knob is simply the Time control under a different name, a bit of the pedal's personality carried into its labeling².

Powering it

The Relaxing Walrus Delay runs on a 9V battery or a standard center-negative 9V DC adapter, drawing 35 mA⁶. That draw is low enough that the pedal sits comfortably on most multi-pedal power supplies. The current version was redesigned in part to make battery replacement easier than before⁶.

Animals Pedal ships to the United States via Yamato, with delivery by UPS; customs duties, taxes and fees are invoiced separately before shipment rather than at checkout⁶.

Versions and limited editions

The pedal has appeared in several forms beyond the standard version.

• Custom Illustrated RW DELAY #01: A collaboration model with the apparel brand over print and illustrator mamoru (mamoru.kame), giving the pedal custom artwork. It was limited to one per customer⁴.
• Charity Edition: A charity edition of the Relaxing Walrus Delay, sold by Animals Pedal alongside the standard and Custom Illustrated versions³.

All versions share the same core specifications: 1 to 500 ms of delay time, the Blend, Repeat and Relax control set, and a 35 mA current draw⁶²³.

The standard pedal's artwork was designed by Jonas Claesson, a surf artist based in Australia. It imagines a walrus relaxing after surfing in a dream camping trailer⁶. The Custom Illustrated version replaces this with mamoru's art⁴.
