The Big Ear Pedals Slice Of Pie is a fuzz pedal shaped like a slice of pizza, launched as a collaboration between Big Ear Pedals and The Tone Mob podcast. Delicious Audio called it "the world's first ever fuzz pedal made to look just like a slice of pizza… that is also a fuzz pedal!"1 It is a Big Muff Pi-style fuzz, so the circuit follows the general approach of Electro-Harmonix's classic fuzz design, and it carries the familiar gain, tone and volume control set.1

The pedal is triangular, with the input and output jacks mounted on the crust edge and three mini knobs for gain, tone and volume sitting just below the crust. The Volume knob controls the pedal's output level. The enclosure is made from bent steel rather than dough, tomato sauce and cheese, and the pedal runs in true bypass.23

Sound

Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach described the pedal's sound as "a saturated but midrange-forward fuzz tone, with plenty of gain range and volume."3 Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio was more playful: "And just like a good slice, this fuzz is huge! Like, so big you'll need two paper plates!"1 Both accounts point the same way: a big, saturated fuzz with a midrange emphasis rather than the scooped character some fuzz designs have.

Margherita or pepperoni

The Slice Of Pie is offered in two looks, a margherita (cheese) version and a pepperoni version. The difference is purely visual: both versions feature the same circuit, and Delicious Audio notes that "The two versions differ only in their looks, they sound and taste the same."123

The Slice Of Pie does not come with a power adapter. Big Ear Pedals recommends using an isolated DC power supply.1

Power and practicalities

The pedal runs off a standard 9V DC power adapter.2 Since no adapter is included and an isolated supply is recommended, plan for a dedicated output on a pedalboard power brick rather than a daisy chain.1

Questions

Is the Big Ear Pedals Slice Of Pie a Big Muff clone?

Delicious Audio describes the Slice Of Pie as a Big Muff Pi-style pedal, meaning it follows the general circuit approach of Electro-Harmonix's classic fuzz rather than being an exact copy. Reviewers describe its sound as a saturated but midrange-forward fuzz tone with plenty of gain range and volume, and it carries gain, tone and volume controls in the manner of a Muff-style design.

Is the Slice Of Pie true bypass?

Yes. Guitar.com lists true bypass operation among the pedal's features, alongside its crust-mounted jacks. True bypass means the pedal's circuit is removed from the signal path entirely when it is switched off.

What power does the Slice Of Pie need?

The Slice Of Pie runs off a standard 9V DC power adapter. Big Ear Pedals notes that the pedal does not come with a power adapter and recommends using an isolated DC power supply, the kind most pedalboard power bricks provide.

What is the difference between the margherita and pepperoni Slice Of Pie?

Nothing but the looks. Both versions feature the same fuzz circuit, and Delicious Audio puts it plainly: the two versions differ only in their looks and sound the same. Guitar.com likewise reports that both contain the same fuzz circuit, offered in margherita and pepperoni variations.

How much does the Slice Of Pie cost?

Guitar.com reported a list price of $199 when the pedal launched in February 2022.

Does the Slice Of Pie really come in a pizza box?

Yes. Guitar.com notes that, just like a real pizza, the Slice Of Pie also comes in a box.
