The Boss OD-200 Hybrid Drive is a programmable overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedal from Boss, part of the 200 series the company introduced in 2019123. Instead of one fixed circuit, it offers 12 drive modes covering everything from a natural, tube-style overdrive with asymmetrical clipping to high-gain distortion and fuzz, and its hybrid design brings analog and digital clipping circuits together in one box1. For a player, that means one pedal can stand in for a whole row of gain pedals, with 128 stored setups you can call up from the footswitches or over MIDI.
A hybrid overdrive, distortion and fuzz with 12 modes
Boss positions the OD-200 as a premium drive pedal built on what it calls its advanced hybrid design, with twelve modes offering "a variety of premium overdrive, fuzz, and distortion sounds"1. The Overdrive mode is described by Boss as a natural tube-style overdrive with asymmetrical clipping, the same clipping approach as the original Boss OD-116. Beyond the 12 primary modes, the pedal includes 15 boost types and series or parallel gain paths, so a drive mode and a boost can be combined in different ways7.
What makes the OD-200 unusual is how directly its modes map to known circuits. Guitar Pedal X's review traced each of the 12 drive types to a specific source31:
| Mode | Based on |
|---|---|
| Overdrive | Boss OD-1 OverDrive |
| Blues | Boss BD-2 / BD-2W Blues Driver |
| Scream | TS808-style circuit |
| Cntr OD | Klon Centaur circuit |
| X-Drive | Boss OD-1X with MDP |
| Dist | Boss DS-1 |
| X-Dist | Boss DS-1X with MDP |
| Stack Drive | Boss ST-2 Power Stack |
| Fat Dist | Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion |
| Brown | JHS Angry Charlie side of the Boss JB-2 Angry Driver |
| X-Metal | Metal-style circuit with MDP |
| Fuzz | A Big Muff voicing |
So a player who knows the BD-2 Blues Driver, the BD-2W Waza Craft version, the OD-1X, the ST-2 Power Stack or the JB-2 Angry Driver already has a rough idea of what several OD-200 modes sound like. Boss also notes a high-gain Brown mode derived from its Katana amplifier series13. Guitar World's launch coverage described the pedal as combining a three-band EQ with "powerful pre and post boosts for detailed gain shaping" over hybrid analog/digital circuitry8.
The controls and memories
The front panel keeps things simple: dedicated knobs for gain and overall level for whichever mode is selected, plus low, mid and high EQ controls for tone shaping1. The multi-function footswitches control bypass, boost on/off and memory scrolling by default, and they can be reassigned to alternate functions1.
Memory is where the OD-200 earns its place on a larger board. It stores 127 user memories plus a real-time panel setting, for 128 total setups1. That was not always the case: a firmware update increased the number of storable memories from 5 to 128, and added a function that always shows the memory number on the display9. Guitar Pedal X noted that after the update you have access to all 127 presets on the pedal itself, navigated by holding the MEMORY button and scrolling with the PARAM dial, though the LED sequence stops lighting after presets 1 to 43.
External control is extensive. Boss says external control of nearly any parameter is possible using footswitches or an expression pedal, and setups can be recalled directly via program change messages from an external MIDI device1.
MIDI and firmware updates
The OD-200 has full MIDI I/O on mini TRS jacks, with the BMIDI-5-35 adapter cable available separately4. RockBoard's PedalPedia entry notes the 200 series pedals support external control via footswitches, an expression pedal, or MIDI7.
Firmware updates are delivered over MIDI. The current system program is version 1.119. The procedure, from Boss's support documentation9:
- Download the OD-200 system program and run the UpdSMF update player on your computer.
- Set the MIDI Out device in the player to the OD-200.
- Hold down the PARAM knob on the OD-200 and insert a plug into the INPUT A jack; the pedal powers on in update mode with "UPd" on the display.
- Follow the update player's steps to send the data.
- After updating, "PrC" appears on the first startup; do not turn the power off while it is displayed.
To check which version is installed, hold down the MEMORY button and insert a plug into the INPUT A jack; the version shows on the display at power-up9.
Boss warns that running the update while the pedal is in normal mode, rather than following the correct procedure, may destroy the system program9.
What reviewers said
Reviewers were broadly positive about the tones but flagged one practical issue: the modes are not level-matched. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson found "a fairly significant / audible difference in volume and gain" between modes at matched 12 o'clock knob positions6, and in a later piece described "the often significant disparity in Output Levels and Gain Saturation between modes"3. In practice that means rebalancing the level knob when you switch modes, or storing per-mode setups in the memories to compensate.
On the sound itself, Pedal of the Day reported that "the tones produced by the OD-200 give you enhanced definition, clarity, and dynamic response"10. Delicious Audio described the pedal as combining decades of Boss tone expertise with innovative technologies4.

Questions
How many presets does the Boss OD-200 store?
It holds 127 user memories plus a real-time panel setting, for 128 total setups. That count applies from firmware version 1.10 onward; earlier firmware stored only 5 memories. After the update, all 127 presets are accessible by holding the MEMORY button and scrolling with the PARAM dial.
Is the Boss OD-200 analog or digital?
It is a hybrid. Boss's design combines analog and digital clipping circuits in one pedal, which is how it covers 12 different overdrive, distortion and fuzz voicings, several of them modeled on classic analog circuits like the OD-1, BD-2 and Tube Screamer.
How do I update the firmware on the OD-200?
Download the system program from Boss, run the UpdSMF update player on your computer, and set its MIDI Out device to the OD-200. Hold down the PARAM knob and insert a plug into the INPUT A jack to enter update mode, then follow the on-screen steps. Do not turn the power off while PrC is displayed on first startup after updating.
Does the Boss OD-200 have MIDI?
Yes. It has full MIDI I/O on mini TRS jacks, with the BMIDI-5-35 adapter cable available separately. Setups can be recalled directly with program change messages from an external MIDI device, and firmware updates are delivered over MIDI from a computer.
Why are some OD-200 modes louder than others?
Because the 12 modes are voiced on very different circuits, from a mild OD-1-style overdrive to a Big Muff-style fuzz, their output levels and gain saturation differ noticeably. Reviewers at Guitar Pedal X noted a significant, audible difference in volume and gain between modes at matched knob positions, so level needs rebalancing when you switch.
