The Butterfly Effects Dobbo is a stereo granular effect pedal, and it is the debut pedal from the Belgian brand Butterfly Effects1. Where a conventional delay pedal repeats what you played, a granular pedal takes small bits of sound, called grains, and rearranges them into something new. Delicious Audio describes the Dobbo as "a stereo granular effect pedal designed not just to process your sound, but to play with it"2. The result, in their words, "can be anything from lush, swelling clouds of ambience to stuttering, rhythmic textures, all generated from your original performance"2.

The pedal was unveiled in April 20253. Guitar Pedal X later gave it a Silver award in its 2025 round-up of the best new modulation, pitch, utility and multi-FX pedals of the year4.

What granular means here

Granular synthesis works by slicing audio into very short grains and playing them back on the pedal's own terms. On the Dobbo, the pedal is constantly recording into a buffer, and the grains are pulled from a delay window of up to 5 seconds62. Each grain lasts from 10 milliseconds to a full second, set by the Size knob2. Grains can be played back forward, in ping-pong, or in reverse6, and Pitch sets their pitch with tape-like re-pitching, in smooth, stepped, or octave-only modes6.

Hold mode captures that constantly recording buffer, freezing the last moments of audio so you can manipulate them indefinitely with all the controls62. Grain envelope modes shape whether those grains land as percussive hits or textural washes6.

The controls

The face of the pedal carries seven knobs, five switches, and a single soft switch1. The core knobs work like this:

ControlWhat it does
RateSets the frequency of grain playback2
TimeSets the delay window for the buffer, from 0 to 5 seconds2
SizeDetermines the duration of each grain, from 10ms to 1 second2
PitchSets pitch of grains with tape-like re-pitching; smooth, stepped, or octave-only modes6
MixSets the blend of input and granular signals62
SpaceAdds stereo panning to grains and reverb for spatial sound62
ChanceAdds random modulation to Rate, Time, Size, and Pitch, with independent depths6

Chance is the control that gives the Dobbo its "playground" character: rather than one random wobble, it scatters four parameters at once, each with its own amount of randomness6. Guitar Pedal X's unveiling coverage described the pedal's randomisation across those four key variable parameters6.

Connections, presets and MIDI

The Dobbo has a high impedance stereo input and stereo outputs, plus an expression/MIDI jack1. The input accepts a TS mono plug or a TRS stereo plug, and the back panel carries separate Out Left and Out Right jacks5. MIDI external control is supported, including MIDI clock modes, and an expression pedal can be used for hands-free control61.

There are eight preset slots for storing and recalling settings, along with tap tempo61. A USB-C port handles firmware updates1, and the manual for Dobbo v1.2 runs 27 pages6, published by the maker as a PDF5.

The Dobbo draws 300mA at 9V DC, center negative5. That is well beyond what a typical battery or a low-current daisy chain outlet supplies, so plan on an isolated or adequately rated power supply.

Size, price and how it compares

Guitar.com's reviewer notes the pedal is roughly the same size as a Little Big Muff Pi1. On price, figures vary by currency and date: Guitar.com lists €350 as of October 20261, while Guitar Pedal X reported £425 for the second batch in June 2025, with one UK buyer paying a total of €496 including shipping and customs fees5.

For context on where it sits, Guitar Pedal X placed the Dobbo near Discomfort Design's mono Phantom Limb when it unveiled the pedal in April 20253. The Dobbo's difference is its stereo panning and reverb, its Chance randomisation across four parameters, and its preset and MIDI facilities.

What reviewers said

Guitar.com's Jason Mays reviewed the Dobbo in October 2026 and rated it 9 out of 101. Pedal of the Day's take on the demo was blunt about the stereo payoff: "this thing sounds INCREDIBLE IN STEREO"6. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson went deep on how to make use of the pedal in a piece published in July 2025, covering where it shines and how best to work with it5, and his site awarded it Silver in its 2025 pedals-of-the-year round-up4.

Questions

What is a granular delay pedal?

A granular pedal takes small bits of your sound, called grains, and rearranges them into new textures. On the Dobbo, grains can be played back forward, in ping-pong, or in reverse, pitched up or down, and scattered with stereo panning and reverb. The result ranges from swelling clouds of ambience to stuttering rhythmic textures, all generated from your original performance.

Does the Butterfly Effects Dobbo have MIDI?

Yes. The Dobbo has an expression/MIDI jack that supports external control, including MIDI clock modes. You can connect an expression pedal for hands-free control of parameters, or use MIDI to sync and switch settings from a controller.

How many presets does the Dobbo have?

The Dobbo has eight preset slots for storing and recalling settings, plus tap tempo. Presets are accessed from the pedal itself using its seven knobs, five switches and single soft switch.

How do you update the Dobbo firmware?

The Dobbo has a USB-C port used for firmware updates. The manual for Dobbo v1.2 is available from Butterfly Effects as a 27-page PDF, so firmware and documentation have both evolved since launch.

Is the Dobbo stereo?

Yes. The Dobbo is a stereo granular effect pedal with a high impedance stereo input and stereo outputs, and its Space control adds stereo panning to the grains and reverb. Pedal of the Day notes that the demo sounds incredible in stereo.
