The Caroline Shigeharu is a fuzz pedal from Caroline Guitar Company, built as an IC fuzz with an octave-up layer running in parallel. Caroline sums up the aim in one line: "Imagine classic Muff-style fuzziness with the punch of a classic overdrive, and you have Shigeharu™."1 The base sound comes from a cascading hybrid of op-amp and BC184 transistor gain stages, and a second footswitch, called Havoc, drops a parallel octave-up voiced fuzz on top of it while you hold it down.1

The pedal lists at $219.99.1

Muff-style fuzz with a parallel octave

The Shigeharu's core is a Muff-style fuzz voice, the family of fuzz circuits descended from the Big Muff, but Caroline positions it as having the punch of a classic overdrive rather than only the saturated sustain of a big fuzz.1 The circuit runs op-amp and BC184 transistor gain stages in a cascading hybrid, which Caroline credits with "all the sweet singing sustain" the design is built around.2

The octave is the part that sets it apart from a straight Muff clone. Rather than a dedicated octave pedal in its own box, the Shigeharu keeps an octave-up voiced fuzz in parallel with the main fuzz, and you call it up with the Havoc stomp.1 In Delicious Audio's Big Muff roundup, Griffin Jennings described it this way:

"Holding down the momentary Havoc foot switch engages a spitty upper octave for maximum chaos"3

Delicious Audio's Christopher Scapelliti, reviewing the pedal, noted the octave layer is not just a novelty: it "adds extra layer of mid-range frequencies to the tone," which is useful for cutting through the mix.4

Controls

The four main knobs are straightforward, as Scapelliti put it: "the pedal's four main knobs are rather straightforward (basically Body, Treble, Drive and Level)."4

ControlWhat it does
DriveSets the gain of the fuzz stages
LevelSets the output volume
BodyShapes the low-mid body of the tone
TrebleShapes the high end

Two further adjustments live inside the pedal:

  • An internal bias/gate control for dialing up broken, spitty sounds1
  • An internal slide switch that locks the octave-up on and converts the Havoc footswitch into a kill/mute switch1

The Havoc switch itself is momentary by default: the octave-up fuzz sounds only while your foot is on it.13 If you want the octave locked in for a whole song, the internal slide switch makes it permanent and turns the same footswitch into a mute, which is handy for killing the signal between phrases.1

Design and collaboration

Caroline designed the Shigeharu with John Snyder of Electronic Audio Experiments, a collaboration the maker describes plainly: "Shigeharu™ was designed in collaboration with our friend John Snyder at Electronic Audio Experiments."1 The pedal is built around a cascading hybrid of op-amp and BC184 transistor gain stages, an approach Caroline credits to this design partnership.1

Delicious Audio has grouped the Shigeharu among lo-fi pedals, alongside effects built around analog tape artifacts, which fits Caroline's general bent toward textured, degraded-sounding circuits.5

The Shigeharu Limited

Alongside the standard version, Caroline has offered a limited run variant of the Shigeharu in an Army Green enclosure, part of what the maker calls "limited run variants of some of our existing faves."5 The Limited uses the same pedal format and control set as the standard Shigeharu, with its Body, Treble, Drive and Level knobs.5

Placement in your signal chain

One practical point Caroline makes about the Shigeharu: it is not fussy about where it sits. The maker states it gives "consistent performance wherever it sits in your signal chain, even after buffers or wireless units."1 Many vintage-derived fuzz circuits interact with what feeds them and change character after a buffer or a wireless system, so a fuzz that behaves the same in either spot is a real consideration if you run a wireless rig or a buffered pedal earlier in the chain.

Questions

What does the Havoc footswitch do on the Caroline Shigeharu?

It is a momentary switch that engages the parallel octave-up voiced fuzz while you hold it down. Release it and you are back to the base Muff-style fuzz.13

Who designed the Caroline Shigeharu?

Caroline Guitar Company, in collaboration with John Snyder at Electronic Audio Experiments.1

Is the Havoc switch momentary or latching?

Momentary by default. An internal slide switch can lock the octave-up on, at which point the footswitch becomes a kill/mute switch.1

Where are the bias and gate controls?

Inside the pedal: an internal bias/gate control for broken, spitty sounds, and the internal slide switch for the octave lock.1

Does the Shigeharu work after a buffer or wireless unit?

Caroline says it performs consistently anywhere in the signal chain, even after buffers or wireless units.1
