The Chase Tone Fuzz Fella is a compact fuzz pedal built around the 1960s Dual Shunt Series Feedback Pair circuit, the design behind the 1968 Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. Chase Tone builds it in several editions, each named for the silicon transistor pair inside: the Red BC183C, the Blue BC108C and the Teal BC109C, plus a germanium Candy Apple Red edition and a 2.0 Ocean Blue BC108C. All of them sit in a 1970s style aluminum enclosure measuring 2.4 inches wide by 1.5 inches high, about palm sized1234.

Every edition listed on the maker's site is currently sold out, including the Red BC183C, Blue BC108C, Teal BC109C, Candy Apple Red Germanium and 2.0 Ocean Blue versions12354.

All Fuzz Fella editions were listed as sold out on the maker's site as of 26 October 2026. Chase Tone also states that upgrade modifications to the FF 1.0 Blue are not available, due to the amount of circuit tweaks and transistor fine-tuning involved4.

The controls: Fuzz, Mids, Feel and Bass

The Fuzz Fella's four knobs are what separate it from a straight Fuzz Face replica. Chase Tone describes each control on the product pages for the silicon editions123.

ControlWhat it does (per Chase Tone)
FUZZFull range fuzz control. Higher settings produce searing high gain fuzz and feedback at lower volume levels; lower settings produce fatter, warmer fuzz for stacking with overdrives and cranked rigs2.
MIDSBoosts mids and output so the pedal can be heard in a band or recording mix. On the Teal BC109C it doubles as a tone control, warm to mids to treble as turned: at zero, warm vintage tones; turned up, glassy mids, treble and output23.
FEELA bias control. Counter-clockwise gives saturated, starved voltage dying battery feel; clockwise gives punchy, round tube-like fuzz. The Blue BC108C version has 2.5X expanded range12.
BASSBass gain adjustment for humbuckers, and for resolving wah compatibility and buffers placed before the fuzz123.
VOLUMETurning clockwise increases sustain, big low-end punch and treble bite near maximum; Chase Tone suggests an optimal setting between noon and max2.

The Feel knob is the one experienced fuzz players will want to understand. On the Red BC183C, Chase Tone says it adjusts "from dying battery velcro fuzz to germanium softness and tube overdrive"1. On the Blue BC108C it is described as an updated bias knob where every setting is musical, with the expanded range running from saturated starved voltage feel through punchy round tube-like fuzz2. On the Teal BC109C, the Magic Feel control's expanded range is described in reference points: harmonically rich germanium-like tones at 0, Gilmour at 11 o'clock, Woman Tone at 1 o'clock, and Allman Bros at maximum3.

The Bass control matters for anyone running a wah or buffer in front. Chase Tone highlights it for humbuckers, wah compatibility resolution, and buffers before fuzz, which on the Teal edition is described as adding to the midrange and treble snarl13. On the Blue BC108C it is described as a bass gain adjustment for humbuckers or for eliminating oscillating wah pedals before the fuzz2.

The Red BC183C edition also cleans up with the guitar's volume knob, going from cleans to what Chase Tone calls melting fuzz tones, and the maker says it emulates a Gibson into a cranked Tweed Deluxe1.

Power and connections

The silicon editions run on a standard 9V DC center negative supply or a 9 volt battery123. The Candy Apple Red Germanium edition is the exception: it requires reverse polarity power, or a 9 volt battery5.

The Candy Apple Red Germanium edition uses reverse polarity on its DC jack, unlike the silicon editions, which are center negative. A standard center negative supply should not be used with it; a battery avoids the issue entirely5.

All editions are true bypass, wired through a high quality epoxy reinforced 3PDT switch that Chase Tone describes as nickel plated with no or low pop when switching123. The 2.0 Ocean Blue edition is also true bypass4. Jacks are rear mounted, hand wired Switchcraft units, which Chase Tone says lets the pedal fit on virtually any pedalboard23. The 2.0 Ocean Blue moves to top mount jacks4.

Versions: Red BC183C, Blue BC108C and Teal BC109C

Each edition is built around a different hand picked silicon transistor pair, and each traces back to a different point in Fuzz Face history123.

The Red BC183C is effectively the '68 Red Velvet Fuzz circuit in the Fuzz Fella enclosure: Chase Tone states it is the exact original circuit and sound, with a brown circuit board instead of green and a new enclosure look1. The Blue BC108C is a limited edition, pedalboard friendly version of what the maker calls a favorite BC108C high gain old-school fuzz tone2. The Teal BC109C began as a tribute to the later Dallas BC109C Fuzz Face pedals of the 70s through 90s3.

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, writing in June 2024, noted that the silicon Fuzz Fella "has appeared in both BC108 and BC109 editions" and that it "delivers those classic later Jimi Hendrix Tones - to Type II Fuzz Face as I classify it"7.

Chase Tone also builds fuzzes with the same transistor families outside the Fuzz Fella line, including the Blue Stardust BC108 Silicon Fuzz (limited production, sold out)8 and the Black Stardust BC109 Silicon Fuzz9.

Who uses it

Chase Tone's product pages carry player comments. Owen Barry is quoted on the Red BC183C page: "I used it in front of 35,000 plus people last night at a festival in Michigan and it sounded fabulous!" The quote refers to the '68 RVF pedal, the circuit the Red BC183C edition carries over1.

Questions

Does the Chase Tone Fuzz Fella take a battery?

Yes. The silicon editions (Red BC183C, Blue BC108C and Teal BC109C) run on a 9V DC center negative supply or a 9 volt battery. The Candy Apple Red Germanium edition is different: it uses reverse polarity power or a 9 volt battery, so check which version you have before plugging in a power supply.

Does the Fuzz Fella work with a wah in front?

Yes, and the Bass control is the reason. Chase Tone says the Bass control resolves wah compatibility and lets you run buffers before the fuzz, which normally causes problems with Fuzz Face style circuits. On the Blue BC108C it is described as a bass gain adjustment for humbuckers or for eliminating oscillating wah pedals placed before the fuzz.

Is the Fuzz Fella true bypass?

Yes. The Red BC183C, Blue BC108C and Teal BC109C editions are wired for true bypass through an epoxy reinforced, nickel plated 3PDT footswitch, which Chase Tone says gives no or low pop when switching. The 2.0 Ocean Blue edition is also true bypass.

What does the Feel knob do on the Fuzz Fella?

It is a bias control. On the Blue BC108C, Chase Tone calls it an updated bias knob with 2.5 times expanded range: counter-clockwise gives saturated, starved voltage dying battery feel, clockwise gives punchy, round tube-like fuzz. On the Red BC183C it adjusts from dying battery velcro fuzz to germanium softness and tube overdrive.

Is the Fuzz Fella still available?

No. As of late October 2026, the maker's pages list the Red BC183C, Blue BC108C, Teal BC109C, Candy Apple Red Germanium and 2.0 Ocean Blue editions all as sold out. Chase Tone also notes that upgrade modifications to the FF 1.0 Blue are not available because of the amount of circuit tweaks and transistor fine-tuning involved.
