The David Ross Musical Instruments Submersion Octave Fuzz is a silicon fuzz with a parallel blend, launched on Kickstarter in January 2024. David Ross describes it as serving as both a clean blend octave-up fuzz and a clean boost, with the octave fuzz mixed in alongside the dry signal rather than stacked in series.1

How the parallel blend works

The Surface control is the upper octave fuzz blend, and it works in parallel: the octave fuzz is blended into the signal the way the gain of a Klon Centaur blends its boost, rather than feeding one circuit into the next. Fully down, the pedal acts as a clean boost. Ramping Surface up introduces progressively more octave fuzz texture, so the player can dial in exactly how much of the octave sits over the dry sound.1

Voicing and how it compares

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reports that David's voicing aims for refined, consistent, controlled and adaptable textures, smoother and more sustaining, distinct from an Octavia's brash, raw sound.1 Where a traditional octave fuzz like an Octavia commits the player to its full character, the Submersion's parallel Surface blend lets the octave texture sit under or over the dry signal in whatever proportion the part calls for. It sits in the wider family of fuzz pedals that use an octave-up stage, and players who want a dedicated pitch effect can also look at octave and pitch pedals.

Price and availability

At launch the Submersion Octave Fuzz was going for $150 through its Kickstarter campaign. Once the campaign concluded, the price rose to $165.1

Questions

Can the Submersion be used as a clean boost?

Yes. David Ross describes the Submersion as serving as both a clean blend octave-up fuzz and a clean boost. With the Surface control fully down, the pedal acts as a clean boost, and ramping the control up introduces progressively more octave fuzz texture into the signal.

What does the Surface knob do on the Submersion?

Surface is the upper octave fuzz blend. It works as a parallel blend, meaning the octave fuzz is mixed in alongside the dry signal rather than in series. Fully down the pedal acts as a clean boost, and turning Surface up brings in progressively more octave fuzz texture.

How does the Submersion sound different from an Octavia?

According to Guitar Pedal X, David Ross's voicing aims for refined, consistent, controlled and adaptable textures that are smoother and more sustaining, distinct from an Octavia's brash, raw sound. The parallel blend design also lets the player dial the octave fuzz in gradually rather than committing to it.

Who designed the David Ross Submersion Octave Fuzz?

The Submersion was designed by David Ross of David Ross Musical Instruments. Guitar Pedal X reports that David spent a long time perfecting his own particular voicing of octave fuzz, and the Submersion is the third of his pedal designs.

How much does the Submersion Octave Fuzz cost?

At the January 2024 Kickstarter launch the Submersion Octave Fuzz was priced at $150. Guitar Pedal X reported that once the Kickstarter campaign concluded, the price would rise to $165.
