The DigiTech JamMan Solo HD is a compact stereo looper pedal from DigiTech, announced on July 4th, 2024 at a retail price of $249.99 USD1. DigiTech positions it as an upgraded successor to the JamMan Solo XT: the maker says it "has all the same great features as the JamMan Solo XT" with the addition of an "improved high definition, low-noise, low-distortion A-D/D-A audio converter"2. DigiTech's own product spotlight goes further, calling it "the best-sounding looper DigiTech has ever created"3.

It is a digital pedal in an all-metal, stompbox-sized chassis1, with 200 internal memory locations holding up to 35 minutes of loops2 and a microSD card slot that DigiTech says extends looping time up to 32 hours21. Ten drum loops from Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stick Men, Mr. Mister) are built in as rhythm patterns4.

The controls

The front panel follows the layout players will recognize from the Solo XT. Recording follows a common footswitch sequence: Premier Guitar describes it as a "single-click-to-record, double-click-to-stop" pattern, with another single click recording an overdub and a hold erasing the loop6.

ControlWhat it does
FootswitchSingle click records, double click stops, another single click records an overdub, hold to erase a loop6
LOOP LEVEL knobControls the output level of the loop2
LED DisplayShows the currently selected loop memory location, JamSync slave status, and Setup menu navigation2
Tempo ButtonPress multiple times to set the tempo for a new loop or change the tempo of a stored loop2
Store ButtonPress to store and copy recorded loops and store changes to loop attributes; hold to delete2
Up/Down ButtonsSelect loop memory locations and navigate the Setup menu; also cue up the next loop for seamless on-the-fly loop transitions2
Setup ButtonPress to enter Setup Mode, where you can change different parameters and attributes2

The Up/Down buttons deserve a note for live players: because they can cue the next loop in advance, transitions between stored loops can be seamless rather than stopping the performance2.

Power and connections: 9V, 2A, external supply only

The JamMan Solo HD has no battery option. DigiTech states plainly that "the JamMan Solo HD can only be powered using the external power supply"2. The included adapter is the PS0920DC-01, supplied with US, EU, UK and AU plugs2. MusicRadar's review lists the power supply as 9VDC 2.0 A5; the earlier JamMan Solo XT shipped with the similarly rated PS0920DC supply, output 9.0VDC 2.0A, and drew less than 9 watts57.

No batteries, and a 2A draw figure means a typical low-current daisy chain is unlikely to be adequate. Plan on the included external supply.

Connections are stereo throughout. The Left Input (Mono) jack takes an instrument, another pedal, or an amp effects send, and the Right Input jack takes a second input for stereo operation2. On the output side, the Left Out (Mono) jack feeds a single guitar amplifier, another pedal input, or an amp effects return, and the Right Out jack feeds a second amplifier2. Bass Magazine's release lists 2 x 1/4 inch instrument jacks (L/R)8. There is also a 1/8 inch aux input connector on the Solo XT the HD is based on7, and a footswitch jack for the optional DigiTech FS3X three-button footswitch, which adds further functions2.

A JamMan Solo XT with HD converters

The Solo HD's family tree runs through three pedals. The original JamMan Solo recorded with 24-bit A/D/A conversion at a 44.1 kHz sampling rate, connected over USB 2.0 High Speed (USB 1.1 compatible), and ran from the included PS200R supply on less than 2 watts9. The JamMan Solo XT followed with 24-bit A/D/A conversion, USB 2.0 High Speed (USB 1.1 compatible), stereo outputs (2 x 1/4" L/R) and a 1/8" aux input connector7. Both the Solo and the Solo XT are now past products, no longer in production but possibly still available through retailers9.

The Solo HD keeps the XT's feature set and upgrades the audio path. DigiTech describes the converter as improved, high definition, low noise and low distortion2; GuitarPlayer's buying guide lists the A/D/A conversion as 24-bit/44.1kHz4. The XT itself used 24-bit A/D/A conversion, USB 2.0 High Speed (USB 1.1 compatible), and drew less than 9 watts from its PS0920DC supply7.

MusicRadar's reviewer Matt McCracken notes the XT is still findable second-hand, "but at around twelve years old, it's getting pretty long in the tooth now"5.

JamSync instead of MIDI

The Solo HD has no MIDI. Its synchronization system is JamSync: connect the JamSync IN jack of one pedal to the JamSync OUT jack of another JamMan Solo HD with a TRS (stereo) 1/8 inch mini cable and the two units run in master and slave loop operation2. Recording Magazine notes you can establish the HD as either master or slave when connecting more than one compatible looper together1. For players who want more foot control without a second pedal, the FS3X footswitch jack is the expansion route2.

What reviewers said

Published reviewers found the pedal capable but not the simplest to learn. MusicRadar's verdict5:

"It's not the easiest loop pedal to get started with, but once you've explored the manual the DigiTech JamMan Solo HD offers huge potential for a variety of looping needs"5

Premier Guitar's review confirms the familiar footswitch workflow, noting that "creating loops on the Solo HD involves a common single-click-to-record, double-click-to-stop footswitch sequence"6. Guitar World's review lists the price as $249 / £239 and the origin as China10.

Questions

Does the JamMan Solo HD run on batteries?

No. DigiTech states the JamMan Solo HD can only be powered using the external power supply, and the unit ships with the PS0920DC-01 adapter, which comes with US, EU, UK and AU plugs. There is no battery compartment, so it needs a mains outlet or a supply that can deliver its current.

How much loop time does the JamMan Solo HD hold?

The pedal has 200 internal memory locations holding up to 35 minutes of loops. DigiTech says a microSD card slot extends looping time up to 32 hours, while Guitar Pedal X reported the SD card adds 16 hours of recording. Either way, card storage multiplies the internal capacity many times over.

Can two JamMan Solo HD pedals sync together?

Yes. JamSync IN and OUT jacks let one pedal act as master and another as slave, connected with a TRS stereo 1/8 inch mini cable. Recording Magazine notes the HD can be established as either master or slave when connecting more than one compatible looper, so two units can run locked loops.

Does the JamMan Solo HD have built-in drum loops?

Yes. GuitarPlayer's looper buying guide lists 10 drum loops from Pat Mastelotto, the drummer known for King Crimson, Stick Men and Mr. Mister, built in as rhythm patterns to play along with when building loops.

Does the JamMan Solo HD have MIDI?

No. Instead of MIDI, the pedal uses DigiTech's JamSync, with IN and OUT jacks for master and slave loop operation with other JamMan Solo HD units over a TRS stereo 1/8 inch mini cable. An optional DigiTech FS3X three-button footswitch can also be connected for additional functions.

What is the difference between the JamMan Solo XT and Solo HD?

DigiTech says the Solo HD has all the same features as the JamMan Solo XT, with the addition of improved high-definition, low-noise, low-distortion A-D/D-A audio converters. The XT is a past product no longer in production and is only available second-hand, at roughly twelve years old according to MusicRadar.
