The DSM/HUMBOLDT Simplifier Classic is an analog preamp and cabinet simulator pedal from DSM/Humboldt, the company also known as DSM Noisemaker. The maker describes it as a 100% true analog preamp that recreates, in its words, "the most useful and popular clean channels" of classic amplifiers, paired with a cabinet simulator section. It was unveiled in September 20191, and it sits in the wider family of preamp pedals and speaker simulation pedals as a pedalboard-friendly replacement for plugging straight into an amp.

The preamp voicings

A three-way selector picks between three classic preamp voicings, each modeled on a well-known amplifier character2:

VoicingWhat the maker says it delivers
AC BRITClassic AC30 sparkly and tridimensional sound, "a true British heritage since the 60's"
AMERICANClassic blackface deluxe sound, sweet and dynamic with a balanced response, "by far the most used amp on studio recordings"
MS BRITClassic clean-to-crunch vintage plexi style amp, "the sound that defined rock music"

All three feed a tone stack the maker describes as "a genuine configurable three band classic amplifier topology, keeping the same feel" and interaction of the original amp, so the bass, middle and treble controls behave the way they do on the amplifiers being modeled2.

Power Tubes, presence and resonance

The Power Tubes section is a three-way toggle switch that mimics the different response of classic tube types: EL34, 6L6 and KT882. Each position changes the feel of the preamp:

  • 6L6: a more open and dynamic response with deeper bass and sparkling highs3
  • EL34: complex mid response with a compressed feel2
  • KT88: similar to 6L6 but with improved low-end range, which the maker calls perfect for bass or 7-string and above guitars3

Around the tone stack, two further controls shape the amp-like response3:

  • PRESENCE: controls the hi-mids response just like the feedback-based presence control on tube amps; turn it up to cut through the mix or down to sweeten aggressive distortions.
  • RESONANCE: controls the low-end and resonance peak caused by transformer-speaker interaction in tube amps, letting you set the damping factor for tight low-end clarity and authority.

The cabinet simulator section

The cabinet section carries two independent cabinet simulators that can be panned left and right, so the pedal can run in true stereo from a single pedalboard2. A three-way toggle switch chooses an independent cabinet style for each side: 1x12 combo, 2x12 or big 4x12 cabinet simulations2. A MIC POSITION control responds like a real center or off-axis microphone position, adjusting the precise amount of high-end roll off2. Even in a mono configuration, the spread control provides pseudo stereo imaging2.

The MIC position control belongs to the Classic. On the later Simplifier MK-II, DSM/Humboldt replaced it4.

From Classic to MK-II

DSM/Humboldt unveiled the Simplifier Classic in September 20191. On the company's MK-II page, it says that "the Simplifier sound held strongly, earning an amazing recognition great sales, reviews and powerful end users experienc[e]," and that the MK-II followed by updating the design, including "replacing the MIC position control" of the Classic's cabinet simulator section4. Players comparing the two should treat the Classic as the original analog preamp and cabinet platform and the MK-II as its revised successor.

Questions

Is the DSM/Humboldt Simplifier Classic fully analog?

Yes. DSM/Humboldt describes the Simplifier as a 100% true analog preamp, recreating popular clean and driven amp channels without digital processing. The cabinet simulator section is also part of the analog design, with two independent cabinet simulators that can be panned left and right for stereo use.

What are the three preamp voicings on the Simplifier Classic?

The pedal offers three classic preamp voicings: AC BRIT, AMERICAN and MS BRIT. AC BRIT is described as a sparkly AC30-style sound with British heritage going back to the 1960s. AMERICAN is a blackface deluxe style sound, sweet and dynamic with a balanced response. MS BRIT is a clean-to-crunch vintage plexi style amp.

What does the Power Tubes switch do?

It is a three-way toggle switch that mimics the different response of classic tube types: EL34, 6L6 and KT88. The 6L6 position gives a more open and dynamic response with deeper bass and sparkling highs, the EL34 position gives a complex mid response with a compressed feel, and the KT88 position is similar to 6L6 but with improved low-end range, suited to bass or 7-string and above guitars.

Can the Simplifier Classic run in stereo?

Yes. The cabinet section holds two independent cabinet simulators that can be panned left and right, each with its own selectable cabinet style. Even in a mono configuration, the pedal's spread control provides pseudo stereo imaging.

What changed between the Simplifier Classic and the MK-II?

The MK-II replaced the MIC position control found in the Classic's cabinet simulator section. DSM/Humboldt introduced the MK-II after the original Simplifier sound had earned strong recognition, sales, reviews and end user response since the Classic was unveiled in September 2019.
