The Dunlop GCB-100 Bass Crybaby is a wah pedal made for bass guitar. It takes Dunlop's classic Crybaby Wah, the pedal most players know from guitar, and modifies the circuit for use with bass, so the sweep works with the lower range of a bass rather than a guitar's1. It belongs to the wah family of effects, covered more broadly on the Wah-Wah Pedals and Bass Pedals pages.
What it does
A wah sweeps a bandpass filter up and down as the player rocks the pedal, moving a vowel-like "wah" sound through the signal. In the GCB-100, that filter is adapted from the standard Crybaby design for bass use. As the Guitar FX Layouts project describes it, the pedal is "Dunlop's classic Crybaby Wah that was modded for use with bass"1.
Where it came from
The GCB-100 sits in a line of Crybaby bass wahs that Dunlop has built over the years. The circuit's origin is the classic Crybaby Wah, changed for bass, according to the Guitar FX Layouts write-up of the design1. Players comparing it today will also find related models in the family, each a different take on the bass wah idea:
- The Dunlop Cry Baby Bass, the standard full-size bass Crybaby
- The Dunlop 105Q Cry Baby Bass Wah and its compact version, the Dunlop Cry Baby Mini Bass Wah
- The Dunlop Geezer Butler Cry Baby, a signature model
