The EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 Lottery League Edition is a limited-edition version of the Avalanche Run V2, a stereo reverb and delay pedal with tap tempo from EarthQuaker Devices. It offers up to 2 seconds of delay time and a lush stereo reverb, with complete control over delay time, repeats, mix and voice through the tone control, plus control over reverb length and mix1.

The Lottery League Edition was announced in April 2024 as a partnership between EarthQuaker Devices and Lottery League, with artwork designed by Clay Parker, an artist from Cleveland, and a portion of the proceeds going to Lottery League2. It was a limited edition sold exclusively through Reverb, offered for pre-order at $299 until 29 May 2024, with units expected to ship in mid-June 20242. The pedal is hand made in Ohio, USA1.

What it does: stereo delay and reverb

The Avalanche Run was developed to take the floating ambient tones of EarthQuaker's Dispatch Master to the next level while keeping it user friendly1. The original Avalanche Run was introduced in 20165, and the V2 has been out for a while, remaining a popular choice for guitarists looking for a versatile reverb/delay pedal2.

In Normal mode the Avalanche Run functions as a straightforward delay and reverb1. The delay side gives you up to 2 seconds of delay time with control over time, repeats, mix and voice, while the reverb side is a plate-style reverb with modulation and an adjustable decay12. MusicRadar described the reverb at the original 2016 launch as a modulated plate-style reverb, with reverse and swell reverbs also available6.

The pedal runs in stereo, with stereo inputs and outputs that expand its sonic palette alongside the expression pedal input5. EarthQuaker's own blog describes it as "a dreamy sonic discovery device with up to 2 seconds of delay time and a lush stereo reverb"1.

Normal, Reverse and Swell modes

A three-way toggle switch selects between three modes7:

ModeWhat it does
NormalStraightforward delay and reverb1
ReverseThe delay line runs in reverse while the reverb stays in normal mode1
SwellReacts to your picking dynamics and adds a volume swell to the entire signal path, much like manually raising and lowering your guitar's volume1

Reverse mode produces backwards delay effects, and Pedal of the Day noted that the pedal can also switch back and forth between normal and reverse delays when in Reverse mode7. Through the three-way toggle you can access reverse delay and dynamic swelling reverb settings2.

The pedal also carries tap tempo with subdivision control2, letting you set delay times in time with the music rather than only by ear on a knob.

Controls, expression and bypass

The delay section offers complete control over delay time, repeats, mix and voice through the tone control, and the reverb section offers control over reverb length and mix1.

For hands-free control, the pedal has an assignable expression control2, and the expression input is CV compatible, so control voltage sources work alongside a standard expression pedal289. EarthQuaker's Flexi-Switch Technology is a relay-based true bypass switching style that allows simultaneous momentary and latching operation4.

The V2 is equipped with true or buffered with trails bypass1, and the buffered option gives five different tail lengths, so you can choose how long the repeats and reverb ring out after switching the pedal off2.

The Avalanche Run V2 uses silent relay-based soft touch switching, and audio will not pass without power. If the pedal loses power, your signal is muted rather than passed through, so it is worth planning your power setup accordingly1.

Power

The Lottery League Edition runs on 9V DC, center negative, with a current draw of 425mA1. EarthQuaker Devices specifies a 9V center-negative 1-amp DC power supply for the Avalanche Run, which is included with the pedal, and lists its current draw as 410mA4. The two figures differ slightly between the maker's product page and the RockBoard PedalPedia listing, so plan a power supply with headroom above 425mA either way. The maker's page also lists 24-bit 96kHz A/D and D/A converters and an output impedance of 100 Ω41.

A draw of this size rules out a battery and means the pedal needs its own isolated output rather than a shared daisy-chain supply.

Analog or digital?

The RockBoard PedalPedia listings for the Avalanche Run V2, including the Lottery League Edition, list the circuit type as analog13. EarthQuaker Devices, on the maker's own product page and blog, describes the Avalanche Run as digital, built using a high-powered proprietary DSP platform45. The presence of 24-bit 96kHz converters on the maker's spec sheet is consistent with the digital description4.

Where it came from and what it cost

The Avalanche Run line goes back to 2016, when the original pedal was introduced5. At launch it was available exclusively from Reverb for $2956, and Premier Guitar later listed its street price as $29510. The original was also sold exclusively via reverb.com at announcement11.

The Lottery League Edition followed the same pattern: a limited edition sold exclusively through Reverb, pre-orderable for $299 (listed in the UK at £253) until 29 May 2024, with units expected to ship in mid-June 20242. As a limited run, it is no longer offered new; the standard Avalanche Run V2 remains the current version of the pedal.

Questions

Is the Avalanche Run V2 analog or digital?

EarthQuaker Devices describes the Avalanche Run as digital, built on a high-powered proprietary DSP platform with 24-bit 96kHz converters, while the RockBoard PedalPedia listing for the V2 lists its circuit type as analog. The delay and reverb are DSP-based in the maker's own description.

Does the Avalanche Run V2 have trails bypass?

Yes. The V2 offers a choice of true bypass or buffered bypass with trails, and the buffered mode gives five different tail lengths so you can set how long the repeats ring out after you disengage the pedal.

Where can I buy the Lottery League Avalanche Run?

It was a limited edition sold exclusively through Reverb. Pre-orders ran at $299 until 29 May 2024, with units expected to ship in mid-June 2024. As a limited run, it is no longer available new from the maker.

Who designed the Lottery League Avalanche Run artwork?

The Lottery League Edition artwork was designed by Clay Parker, an artist from Cleveland, with a portion of the proceeds going to Lottery League. The standard Avalanche Run artwork is by Matt Horak.

Does the Avalanche Run V2 pass signal without power?

No. The V2 uses silent relay-based soft touch switching, and audio will not pass without power. If your power supply fails or is unplugged, the pedal mutes the signal path rather than passing it through.

Does the Avalanche Run V2 have an expression input?

Yes. It has an assignable expression control for hands-free control over pedal parameters, and the expression input is CV compatible, so control voltage sources can drive it as well as a standard expression pedal.
