The Flattley Solaris Pro is an analog fuzz and booster from Flattley, a builder based in Gloucester, UK. Flattley's stated idea behind it was "a simple fuzz box that would do a few tones well, a 'fuzz without fuss'."1 Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described it as "a rather gorgeous-looking high-end Big Muff-style fuzz with extra boost footswitch."2

A fuzz without fuss

The Solaris Pro is a Big Muff-style fuzz, and it shares the controls of its muse, but with a lot more gain added to the Sustain knob. That extra gain means the amount of distortion can be controlled from the guitar's volume knob, and the circuit cleans up well with a low signal.2

The gain is pre-set to max at the factory, and Flattley points players to the guitar's own volume control as the tone-shaping tool: "the volume control of your guitar can be used to change the tone so don't forget."1 In practice, the pedal is set to full fuzz and the player dials the effect in from the instrument, which is where the "fuzz without fuss" idea comes from.1

The controls and the boost footswitch

The Solaris Pro version was born from the standard Solaris. The change that defines the Pro is on the footside: the Norm/Norm+ toggle switch of the standard version is swapped out for a boost footswitch, "to make it a little more functional for live show application."1 The Pro also comes standard with two halo light rings fitted.1

ControlWhat it does
Sustain knobSets the fuzz, with more gain on tap than a Big Muff, so distortion can be controlled from the guitar's volume knob2
GainPre-set to max; the guitar's volume control is used to change the tone1
Boost footswitchReplaces the Norm/Norm+ toggle switch of the standard Solaris for live use1

If you are comparing the two versions, the standard Solaris uses a Norm/Norm+ toggle switch where the Pro has a second footswitch for the boost.1

The enclosure

The Solaris Pro is part of Flattley's Platinum Range. According to Delicious Audio, all Platinum Range pedals are hand processed in the Flattley paint shop, with a bare aluminum enclosure finished in etch primer, base coats, holographic chrome flake, hydro dipped graphics, and a minimum of three coats of wet sanded lacquer, hand polished to a high gloss finish.2

Flattley has other fuzz designs in its range, including the Flattley DG Fuzz, a dual pedal pairing a booster with a '60s-style fuzz, and the Flattley JK Fuzz. The Solaris Pro sits apart from those as the Big Muff-style design with the built-in boost.2

Questions

Is the Flattley Solaris Pro analog?

Yes. Flattley's product listing gives the circuit type as analog, so the Solaris Pro is a straightforward analog fuzz and booster with no digital processing or presets involved. Its controls are the Sustain knob, the pre-set gain, and the boost footswitch that replaced the toggle switch of the standard Solaris.

What power supply does the Solaris Pro need?

The Solaris Pro runs on 9V DC, center negative, the same standard supply used by most compact pedals. Flattley's listing gives that as the pedal's voltage requirement, so a regular 9V DC center-negative supply or pedalboard power output will run it.

How do you change the gain on the Solaris Pro?

You mostly do not, and that is the idea. The gain is pre-set to maximum at the factory, and Flattley suggests using the volume control of your guitar to change the tone and dial back the amount of fuzz. Rolling the guitar's volume down cleans the signal up, and up for full fuzz.

What is the difference between the Solaris and the Solaris Pro?

The Solaris Pro grew out of the standard Solaris, which used a Norm/Norm+ toggle switch. On the Pro, that toggle is swapped for a boost footswitch to make the pedal more functional for live shows, and the Pro comes standard with two halo light rings fitted.

Is the Solaris Pro based on a Big Muff?

Yes, in style at least. Delicious Audio described it as a high-end Big Muff-style fuzz with an extra boost footswitch. It shares the controls of its muse, but with considerably more gain on the Sustain knob, so distortion can be controlled from the guitar's volume knob.
