The Function f(x) CJOD is a mini overdrive pedal and the company's take on the Clay Jones Overdrive, a pedal Function f(x) describes as "once wildly popular, rare as hen's teeth, splatter-painted." The circuit is Tubescreamer-inspired, and the maker pitches it at players who want that boutique "808" tone without paying boutique prices: "Fans of expensive Tubescreamer-inspired pedals will enjoy that boutique “808” tone at a truly reasonable price."1
The circuit and the diode selector
Function f(x) says its version is true to the original Clay Jones Overdrive with one exception: the diode selector switch, which has three options instead of two.2 The switch changes the clipping stage, which is what shapes how the overdrive compresses and saturates the signal:
| Selector position | Clipping type |
|---|---|
| 1 | Asymmetrical silicon diodes (1N914) |
| 2 | LEDs |
| Center | "Diode lift" (no diodes) |
The silicon setting keeps the pedal closest to classic Tubescreamer-style clipping, the LED setting is a different clipping character, and the diode lift removes the clipping diodes from the signal path entirely, leaving the tone stack and gain stage to do the work.1
Controls, size and power
The CJOD carries the standard overdrive control set: Level, Tone, and Gain.1 The enclosure is a mini pedal with laser-etched artwork, measuring 3.6″ x 1.5″ x 1.2″ (92.5 x 38.5 x 31 mm) and weighing 7 oz (198 g). Function f(x) describes it as taking up "less than half the pedalboard footprint" of a full-size pedal.1
Power is 9V DC, which the maker calls the industry standard, with a 10mA current draw.1 That low draw means it fits easily on a shared pedalboard power supply.
The CJOD is part of Function f(x)'s mini pedal line, alongside pedals like The Third Rail, the MacGuffin, the Compound Fracture, the MiniTaur, and the MicroFracture.2
