The Ge/Si Focus Fuzz is a fuzz pedal from Great Eastern FX built around a hybrid transistor circuit: two silicon transistors plus one germanium, arranged as a reinvention of the classic Fuzz Face layout1. It sits in the fuzz family, but it was conceived with a particular player in mind: the guitarist who has tried fuzzes and bounced off them.
Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, reviewing the pedal in December 2023, described exactly that intent:
"Developed in part for fuzz haters as it never really goes off the rails! Such a cleverly engineered fuzz."
In the same roundup, Karlsson named it among the year's notable new fuzz pedals and listed it at £249 GBP1.
The circuit and what it does
The heart of the pedal is its transistor arrangement. Where a traditional Fuzz Face uses a pair of germanium or silicon transistors, the Ge/Si Focus Fuzz mixes both types, with two silicon and one germanium transistor in the chain1. The hybrid approach is what the maker's designer, David, used to reinvent the classic Fuzz Face circuit, according to Guitar Pedal X1.
The practical result, as the reviewer framed it, is a fuzz that stays composed: it was developed partly for players who dislike fuzz because it does not go off the rails in the way many fuzzes can1. Karlsson's verdict summed it up as cleverly engineered, easy to dial in, and sounding superb1.
Where it sits in the Focus Fuzz family
The Ge/Si version is one of several Focus Fuzz variants. Great Eastern FX also offers the all-silicon Focus Fuzz Silicon, the original Focus Fuzz, and the expanded Focus Fuzz Deluxe, which adds boost, overdrive and octave overtone circuits. The company has also released the limited OC201 Preamp, which covers fuzzy-drive, fuzz preamp and silicon fuzz territory.
