The Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz is a limited edition fuzz pedal handmade in Cambridge, England by indie builder Great Eastern FX. It was the company's third pedal, following the Small Speaker Overdrive and the Design-A-Drive, and its first foray into fuzz territory12. The circuit mixes new silicon transistors with NOS germanium, including a Soviet-era germanium transistor that is tricky to source, which is a large part of why the run was small13.

What set it apart from most fuzz boxes was the Focus control, from which the pedal takes its name. Founder and chief designer David Greeves describes the sound as something between a Tone Bender, a Fuzz Face and a Dallas Rangemaster3. Production was limited to 250 units, priced at £249 ($285) each, and all 250 sold out soon after the March 2023 launch24.

A germanium and silicon fuzz built around the Focus control

The Focus Fuzz blends new silicon transistors with NOS germanium in one circuit, a hybrid approach Guitar.com's reviewer Richard Purvis called its defining feature1. Premier Guitar's reviewer noted that a significant part of the fuzzy heart is a Soviet-era germanium transistor that is tricky to source, which explains the limited production6.

Greeves set out to build a fuzz that behaved. As he put it when the pedal launched:

"We wanted to create a pedal that would give fuzz-like sustain, aggression and rich overtones, but deliver all the other things we want as well"2

MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley, reporting the launch2

The pedal was marketed as a fuzz that plays well with all kinds of guitar amps, and MusicRadar framed it as a fuzz for people who don't like fuzz27. At low Fuzz settings it behaves like an overdrive pedal, gradually becomes more like a distortion pedal as you turn the dial, and only at its extremes goes into square-wave vintage fuzz2. Delicious Audio found that at lower Focus settings the circuit delivers tones closer to a distortion pedal than a fuzz, with a warmer, less compressed sound, tightening into a fuzz reminiscent of a Tone Bender as the knob comes up5.

The controls

The original Focus Fuzz has three knobs: Fuzz, Level and Focus, with top-mounted jacks arranged across the top of the unit24.

ControlWhat it does
FuzzDials in more gain as you turn it, and also adjusts the bias voltage, changing the character of the gain across the dial2
LevelSets the output volume2
FocusApplies a tuned gain boost to the front end of the circuit, adding bite, aggression and harmonics as you turn it clockwise while tamping down some low end24

The Focus control is the pedal's signature. Guitar.com described it as a control that focuses the midrange response: loose and natural to the left, tight and raspy to the right8. MusicRadar quoted the maker's own description of its range as offering "fat, fuzzy sustain at one extreme to cutting and incisive bite at the other"2. Premier Guitar summarized it simply as a control that adds gain as you boost treble3.

The Fuzz knob's trick is that it adjusts both bias and gain at the same time, so usable tones sit across the full travel of the dial rather than clustering in one spot7.

The versions: Silicon and Deluxe

Two further pedals grew out of the original.

Focus Fuzz Silicon. The Silicon followed the original Focus Fuzz, a limited edition restricted to just 250 units, all of which soon sold out after launch in March2. MusicRadar's review of the Silicon found that it lets you hear each note where some fuzz boxes turn a chord into one big thing4. Like the original, it is a fuzz pedal, with the Focus control applying a tuned gain boost to the front-end of the circuit that offers "fat, fuzzy sustain at one extreme to cutting and incisive bite at the other"2.

Focus Fuzz Deluxe. Launched in March 2025 at £299, the Focus Fuzz Deluxe returns to the hybrid silicon and germanium circuitry of the original 2023 limited edition, with an NOS germanium transistor in the fuzz circuit, and adds a three-way Mode switch for Boost, Drive and Fuzz settings plus a transistor-based analog octave-up overtone circuit91082. Guitar Pedal X reported 400 units were planned9. In Boost and Overdrive modes you are restricted to the Focus and Level controls; Fuzz mode adds the Fuzz knob9.

What reviewers said

The original Focus Fuzz reviewed well. Guitar.com rated it 9 out of 10, with reviewer Richard Purvis calling it "very much a 21st-century noise-maker" in its clear tones and smart flexibility, despite inspiration drawn straight from the 60s1. Guitar Pedal X named it in its 2023 best new fuzz pedals of the year, calling it "cleverly engineered" and noting it was developed in part for fuzz haters because it never really goes off the rails11.

"Such a cleverly engineered fuzz."

On the note-definition front, MusicRadar's review of the Silicon version found it lets you hear each note where some fuzz boxes turn a chord into one big thing4. Reviewers were positive about the range as a whole: the original Focus Fuzz was rated 9 and described as "very much a 21st-century noise-maker" in its clear tones and smart flexibility1, while the Ge/Si Focus Fuzz was called "cleverly engineered" and easy to dial in, developed in part for fuzz haters as it never really goes off the rails111.

The Deluxe carried the reputation forward. Premier Guitar praised its robust pots and switches, considerable heft, and the fuzz's sensitivity to guitar volume, tone attenuation and touch dynamics, noting that output level differences between the fuzz, drive and boost modes are pretty uniform, so quick switches on the fly will not cause an ear-frying level jump6. MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley called it "not cheap but think of it as three or four pedals in one"10, and Guitar.com's 2026 best fuzz pedals guide named it the best combined fuzz and overdrive in its category12.

Questions

How many Great Eastern Focus Fuzz pedals were made?

The original Focus Fuzz was a limited edition restricted to 250 units. It launched in March 2023 and all 250 sold out soon after. The later Focus Fuzz Deluxe was planned as a run of 400 units.

What is the difference between the Focus Fuzz and the Focus Fuzz Deluxe?

The Deluxe keeps the hybrid silicon and germanium fuzz core of the original and adds a three-way Mode switch for Boost, Drive and Fuzz settings, plus an octave-up overtone circuit. In Boost and Overdrive modes only the Focus and Level controls are active; Fuzz mode adds the Fuzz knob.

Is there a silicon version of the Focus Fuzz?

Yes. The Focus Fuzz Silicon launched in July 2023 as a darker, grittier and more affordable all-silicon version, built around three low-gain silicon transistors. It was released after the original limited edition sold out, partly because germanium transistors were hard to source.

Who designed the Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz?

David Greeves, founder, chief designer and owner of Great Eastern FX, designed the Focus Fuzz. He describes the sound as something between a Tone Bender, a Fuzz Face and a Dallas Rangemaster.

Where is the Focus Fuzz made?

The Focus Fuzz is handmade in Cambridge, England, by Great Eastern FX, a Cambridge-based indie builder. It was available direct or via select retailers.

Does the Focus Fuzz have top-mounted jacks?

Yes. The Focus Fuzz has top-mounted jacks, with all the jacks arranged across the top of the unit. MusicRadar noted this suggests Great Eastern had cracked fuzz-pedal-to-pedalboard integration.
