The Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz Deluxe is a limited-run fuzz pedal built in Cambridge, UK by Great Eastern FX, the company founded by David Greaves. It is an evolution of the 2023 limited edition Focus Fuzz, and its "deluxe" status comes from what was added: boost, overdrive and octave functions on top of the original fuzz circuit1.

A three-way rotary switch selects Boost, Drive or Fuzz, and a second footswitch applies a transistor-based analog octave-up overtone on top of whichever mode is running2. The whole thing is built on a through-hole board inside a gold hammertone-finish enclosure with skirted knobs, weighing a reassuring 650g13.

Fuzz, drive and boost with an octave overtone

The Focus Fuzz Deluxe covers three gain modes plus the octave, all from one box523:

  • Boost: Guitar.com's reviewer found it can be deployed as a clean boost with quite a lot of added output available, while Guitar Pedal X described a beautiful subtle grit, adjacent to a dirty boost14.
  • Drive: Guitar Pedal X found the overdrive reaches well into fuzzy-drive territory but can also be very classically overdrive-y; Guitar.com's reviewer heard too much fuzzy fluffiness for a conventional overdrive, a tonally neutral medium-gain crunch14.
  • Fuzz: Guitar Pedal X described a full Fuzz Face sear, beautifully textured but immaculately behaved and expansively tweakable4.
  • Octave/Overtone: A second footswitch applies a transistor-based analog octave-up2. Premier Guitar's reviewer found it adds buzzing, fractured and ringing overtones without stripping low end from the signal, and called the octave function "a star" that is more musical than many octave-up effects, keeping chords full and detailed3.

The octave is not limited to fuzz mode. Premier Guitar's reviewer confirmed "It works with the fuzz, drive, or boost"3, and Guitar Pedal X found the octave and overtone works beautifully with the boost and overdrive modes too4. Premier Guitar's reviewer found that adding the octave to boosted signals with a generous heap of focus input yields funky, eccentric electric-sitar tones3.

A practical detail Premier Guitar highlighted: the output level differences between fuzz, drive and boost are pretty uniform, so quick mode switches on the fly will not cause an ear-frying level jump3.

The controls

The pedal carries three knobs, a three-way rotary mode switch and two footswitches42.

ControlWhat it does
FocusCombines a gain boost and a frequency boost; adds gain at the front of the circuit plus high-mid presence. Loose and natural to the left, tight and raspy to the right; the profile gets brighter and more searing as you turn it up143
LevelControls overall output2
FuzzAdjusts bias, gain and compression together; only works in fuzz mode, so in boost or drive the gain is fixed14
Mode switchThree-way rotary selecting Boost / Drive / Fuzz42
Left footswitchApplies the Harmonic Overtone Octave5

The Focus control is the pedal's signature, inherited from the original Focus Fuzz, where it was designed to push the guitar firmly to the front of the mix8. It works in all three modes: Guitar.com's reviewer notes that in both non-fuzz modes the knob is also adding gain to the front of the circuit1.

Guitar Pedal X pointed out an unusual interplay: it is the only fuzz that reviewer knows of where you can turn down any two of the three knobs and still get interesting outputs4.

Inside the circuit: germanium and silicon transistors

The Deluxe replaces the all-silicon circuitry of the standard Focus Fuzz with the mixed silicon and germanium transistors of the original 2023 limited edition1. MusicRadar describes it as a hybrid silicon-germanium circuit with an NOS germanium transistor under the hood2, and Premier Guitar identifies that fuzzy heart as a Soviet-era germanium transistor that is tricky to source3. That scarcity is what limits production.

Guitar Pedal X broke the circuit down by section4:

Circuit sectionTransistors
Focus gain1 x BC107B
Boost and Overdrive1 x BC107B, plus 2 x red LEDs for the overdrive
Fuzz1 x MP38A germanium + 1 x BC107B
Octave/Overtone1 x BC107B + 1 x BC177B, blended into the core signal

The fuzz circuit is nigh identical to the original Focus Fuzz's two-transistor hybrid core4. The octave section's BC107B and BC177B pairing is what Guitar Pedal X credits for uniquely warm and musical harmonic octave overtones4. The circuit is executed on through-hole board, and Premier Guitar praised the robust pots and switches and the pedal's considerable heft3.

History: from the 250-unit Focus Fuzz to a 400-unit Deluxe

The original Focus Fuzz launched in March 2023 as the third pedal from Great Eastern, following the Small Speaker Overdrive and Design-A-Drive19. It was marketed as the fuzz for people who don't like fuzz, aimed at convincing players who never got on with fuzz that it was a viable pedalboard option, working with single-coil and humbucker guitars alike210. Production was limited to 250 units because Greaves only had parts enough for that many, with the MP38A germanium transistors particularly hard to get hold of49. All 250 sold soon after launch11.

The all-silicon Focus Fuzz Silicon followed in July 2023 as a darker, grittier and more affordable version built on the silicon side of the original circuit1112. The Focus Fuzz Deluxe, launched in March 2025, returns to the hybrid germanium-silicon design and expands it with the boost, overdrive and octave circuits42. Greaves estimated he had enough transistors for 400 Deluxe units3, matching the 400 units planned at launch4.

What reviewers said

Reviews were positive across the board. Guitar.com's Richard Purvis summed up his verdict as "Great fuzz sounds, great drive sounds, great boost sounds"1, and Guitar.com's 2026 fuzz buying guide named it the best combined fuzz and overdrive in that category, crediting it with nailing prized Tone Bender sounds while also serving as a medium-gain overdrive or clean boost6. Guitar Pedal X gave it a Silver award in the site's 2025 fuzz roundup5.

"Not cheap but think of it as three or four pedals in one."
Jonathan Horsley, MusicRadar2

On the Tone Bender question, Guitar.com's reviewer found that "with the focus control at minimum, it's very close indeed to the classic Tone Bender MkII sound"1. Interestingly, the same site's 2023 review of the original Focus Fuzz concluded that pedal was not really a Fuzz Face or Tone Bender in overall voicing, but an altogether more modern-voiced pedal than expected13.

The main criticism was price. MusicRadar's reviewer framed it as three or four pedals in one2, and Premier Guitar's reviewer noted it is hard to imagine adding extra footswitches without sacrificing the pedal's basic elegance and proportions and elevating the already considerable price3.

Questions

What is the difference between the Focus Fuzz and the Focus Fuzz Deluxe?

The Deluxe is an evolution of the 2023 limited edition Focus Fuzz. It keeps the original hybrid two-transistor fuzz core and the Focus control, but adds separate boost and overdrive circuits selected by a three-way rotary switch, plus a second footswitch that applies a transistor-based analog octave-up overtone. Around 400 Deluxe units were planned, against 250 of the original134.

Does the octave work in boost and drive modes?

Yes. Premier Guitar's reviewer confirmed the octave works with the fuzz, drive, or boost modes, and Guitar Pedal X found the octave and overtone works beautifully with the boost and overdrive modes too. Guitar.com's reviewer described boosted signals with a generous amount of focus and the octave added as funky, eccentric electric-sitar tones43.

How many Focus Fuzz Deluxe pedals were made?

Around 400 units were planned. Great Eastern founder David Greaves estimated he had enough transistors for 400 Focus Fuzz Deluxe pedals, roughly matching the 400 units reported at launch. The original 2023 Focus Fuzz was limited to 250 units because the MP38A germanium transistors were hard to source4311.

What does the Focus knob do?

Focus combines a gain boost and a frequency boost, adding gain at the front of the circuit along with high-mid presence. Turned down it leaves the midrange loose and natural; turned up the profile gets brighter and more searing, tightening the midrange. It works in all three modes, not just fuzz543.

How much power does the Focus Fuzz Deluxe draw?

It runs on 9V DC from a pedalboard power supply and draws around 10mA, according to MusicRadar's review. That is a light enough draw that it shares easily with other pedals on a typical isolated supply2.

Does the Focus Fuzz Deluxe sound like a Tone Bender MkII?

Guitar.com's reviewer found that with the Focus control at minimum it is very close indeed to the classic Tone Bender MkII sound. The same site's buying guide also credits it with nailing prized Tone Bender sounds. Note that Guitar.com's earlier review of the original Focus Fuzz found that pedal not really a Tone Bender in overall voicing1613.
