Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz Silicon

The Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz Silicon is a compact analog fuzz and overdrive pedal with three controls: Focus, Fuzz and Level. It is built around a trio of specially selected low-gain silicon transistors in an original circuit, and RockBoard's PedalPedia says it covers everything from crunchy drive to full-on fuzz¹. It launched in July 2023 as a darker, grittier and more affordable follow-up to the limited edition Focus Fuzz, which sold out in a flash, and it is handmade in the UK².

The pedal came out of a practical problem: germanium transistors had become hard to source, so Great Eastern FX built an all-silicon version of the circuit. MusicRadar's reviewers describe the result as "a new shade rather than a completely different colour" of the original³.

The controls: Focus, Fuzz and Level

Three knobs do all the work, and reviewers found them unusually interactive.

The Focus control is the pedal's namesake and its distinguishing feature. Guitar World's Jonathan Horsley describes it as "trimming down some of that low-end flab to add 'bite, aggression and harmonics'"⁴. Because it adds gain as it cuts bass, it works as a voicing tool rather than a simple tone control.

The Fuzz knob is designed to stay usable across its whole range. Because it adjusts bias and gain together, MusicRadar notes that "you can find usable tones across the full travel of the dial"². Level then sets the output, with enough volume to drive an amp harder if you want it².

Physically, the pedal is compact, with all jacks arranged across the top of the unit and all-black dials with white pointers. A single footswitch with a red/orange LED shows when the effect is active³.

The silicon side of the limited Focus Fuzz

The Focus Fuzz Silicon is based on the silicon side of the original Great Eastern FX Focus Fuzz, a limited edition fuzz pedal that sold out. Reviewers described the Silicon version as a "darker, grittier" and more affordable take on that limited edition pedal². It is handmade in the UK and is out now, priced at £199/$239².

David Greeves, chief designer and owner of Great Eastern FX, says the new voicing has a little more bite and aggression than the limited edition². MusicRadar's later coverage of the Focus Fuzz Deluxe looked back on the silicon variant and called it "a doozie"⁵.

The line has since grown. The Focus Fuzz Deluxe, launched in March 2025, adds separate boost, overdrive and octave/overtone circuits to the original hybrid design, and the limited OC201 Preamp built a fuzz preamp around a rare NOS Mullard OC201 silicon transistor.

What reviewers made of it

Published reviewers were positive about how easy the pedal is to live with. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as "extremely player-friendly and easy to dial in"¹, and Guitar World's verdict ran along the same lines:

That framing echoes how the original Focus Fuzz was marketed, as a fuzz for people who do not like fuzz, and it points at the pedal's main appeal: the Focus control lets you pull the effect back toward a focused drive sound rather than committing to full fuzz⁴².
