The GUPtech Poulp is a small octave-up pedal from GUPtech, a builder based in Saguenay, Québec, Canada, where all of its pedals are made. It is based on the classic Green Ringer circuit, and GUPtech says it will give any clean, distortion or fuzz pedal a very nice octave-up character. The whole pedal is a single switch: no knobs, no tone shaping, just the effect on or off. It belongs to the wider family of octave and pitch pedals1.

What it does and how it is used

The Green Ringer is a ring-modulator-style octave circuit, and the Poulp applies it in the simplest possible form. GUPtech's product page describes it as a pedal that "will give any clean, distortion or fuzz a very nic"1, meaning it is designed to sit alongside other pedals and add an octave-up ring to whatever signal it receives. Because there are no controls, the character of the effect is fixed, and the player shapes the result with what feeds it: a fuzz, distortion or overdrive pedal ahead of the Poulp, or a clean signal on its own1.

The Poulp is built by GUPtech itself rather than outsourced: "All of our pedals are made by us in Saguenay, Québec, Canada"1. It is also light on power, with the maker listing "Power consumption : 2mA"1, so it sits easily on a shared supply alongside other pedals.

Controls and power

The control set is as short as it gets. GUPtech states: "No control, only an on-off switch"1. There is no knob to set, no blend and no octave selection, which makes the Poulp a set-and-forget effect on a board.

Power is 9Vdc center negative only, with power consumption listed at 2mA1. That draw is low enough for any standard supply, and the maker's restriction to 9V center negative is worth noting before wiring it into a daisy chain.

GUPtech built several versions around the same Green Ringer core, and the differences come down to switching and enclosure size213:

GUPtech sells the Poulp directly from its own workshop, with the maker's page listing it at "Sale price £55.00 GBP"1. The maker notes that "All of our pedals are made by us in Saguenay, Québec, Canada"1, so units come from the company's own build in Quebec rather than from a contract manufacturer.

GUPtech announced on 2022-11-25 that it is "slowly moving away from this original design with the new Broctopus", which is bigger but includes a momentary latch/jog feature and is easier to build and more reliable1. As of the maker's pages dated 2026-10-26, the Poulp, the Poulp Douche and the Lab #50 are all listed as sold out142.

Availability

All versions of the Poulp family are currently sold out on the maker's site: the standard Poulp1, the Poulp Douche edition4 and the Lab #50 Momentary Poulp2. The BROctopus remains the maker's current take on the same Green Ringer circuit for players who want momentary switching in a larger 125B enclosure3.
