The GUPtech VeJ7 - POR-Corn is a preamp pedal modeled on the Orange RockerVerb amplifier. GUPtech calls it "a take at one of the most loved amp ever, the Orange RockerVerb," and builds the circuit from four gain stages using JFET transistors, the transistor type often used to give pedals an amp-like feel1.

Controls

The pedal keeps its control set close to an amp channel: a classic three band EQ, plus Input Gain, Gain, and volume controls. Input Gain is used to tame high output pickups or to boost single coil pickups, so the pedal can be matched to the guitar in front of it before the Gain stage does its work1.

ControlWhat it does
Input GainTames high output pickups or boosts single coil pickups1
GainSets the amount of drive1
Three band EQClassic bass, middle, treble tone shaping1
VolumeSets output level1

Power

The POR-Corn runs on 9 to 18V DC, center negative, and draws 3mA1. It has no 9V battery support1.

There is no battery compartment, so a DC supply is required. The 3mA draw is low enough that a standard supply with plenty of headroom is all the pedal needs.

Versions and availability

GUPtech also offered a VeJ7 Popcorn Gold Rush Edition, which uses exactly the same circuit as the original VeJ7 in a unique Gold box. That version is sold out2. The standard POR-Corn is available in Cream and Red and was listed as re-stocking soon1.

Questions

Does the GUPtech VeJ7 POR-Corn take a 9V battery?

No. The POR-Corn runs on external DC power only and has no 9V battery support. It uses a center negative supply at 9 to 18V DC and draws just 3mA, so any standard center negative pedal supply will run it, including a share of a daisy chain given the low current draw.

What amp is the GUPtech POR-Corn modeled on?

The POR-Corn is GUPtech's take on the Orange RockerVerb amplifier. GUPtech describes it as a take on one of the most loved amps ever, the Orange RockerVerb, built with four gain stages using JFET transistors to reproduce the amp's character in a pedal.

Can the POR-Corn run on 18V?

Yes. The pedal accepts 9 to 18V DC, center negative. Running it at 18V is within the maker's stated range, and the pedal draws only 3mA either way.

Where is the GUPtech POR-Corn made?

GUPtech builds all of its pedals in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, and the POR-Corn is made there by the company itself.

What does the Input Gain knob do on the POR-Corn?

Input Gain is used to tame high output pickups or to boost single coil pickups. It sits alongside the Gain and volume controls and a classic three band EQ, letting you match the pedal's front end to whatever guitar is plugged into it.
