The Joyo Nascar Delay is an analog delay pedal from Chinese maker Joyo, announced in October 2019. It is built around the classic bucket-brigade device (BBD) circuit, the same analog topology as vintage delay pedals, and Joyo designed it to deliver vintage tape echo-like sounds, tones the company describes as "perfect for sentimental guitar solos"1. It carried a street price of $58.99 at launch1.

The pedal is also known as the R-10 Nascar Delay: Joyo's own product page lists it under that name, as part of the company's R series of compact pedals23. Press coverage at launch used both names for the same unit43.

How it works and what it does to your sound

A bucket-brigade device, or BBD, is an analog circuit: instead of converting your signal to digital samples, it passes the signal along a chain of capacitors, one step at a time, which creates the delay. Pedal of the Day describes the R-10 Nascar as a Bucket Brigade Device analog circuit4. That topology is what gives analog delays their characteristic voice: repeats that get progressively darker and less defined with each pass.

Joyo says the pedal is inspired by the classic BBD circuit1, and gearnews.com notes that, unlike the other pedals in Joyo's R series, this one is analog and based on the well-known bucket chain circuit6. Pedal of the Day's review found the pedal delivers "a warm and natural sound," with dark repeats that wash away into the background rather than sitting on top of the playing4.

"Delivering a warm and natural sound, this delay will ECHO all that you love about this effect genre"
Pedal of the Day4

The pedal is intended for both electric guitar and bass4.

Controls and the LED mode toggle

The control set is deliberately simple. Three knobs and one toggle cover everything41:

ControlWhat it does
DelaySets the delay time, from 20ms to 400ms5
F.back (Feedback)Sets how many repeats, and how far they build on each other15
MixBalances the dry signal against the repeats15
LED mode toggleSelects one of three LED light modes: Sync, Always, or Off15

The LED mode toggle only affects the indicator light. In Sync mode the LED blinks in time with the delay, in Always mode it stays lit, and in Off mode it is dark15. It has no effect on the sound.

On delay time, the sources differ slightly: Joyo's product page specifies 20ms to 400ms5, while Pedal of the Day found the delay time "maxes out around 500ms, which is fairly standard for analog delays"4. Either way, this is a short-to-medium delay in the classic analog mold, not a long digital delay.

What it does not have

The pedal has no tap tempo and no stereo option. gearnews.com pointed out the trade-off directly6:

"If there were options for stereo or tap-tempo, it would probably cost a lot more"
Jef, gearnews.com6

Where it came from

Joyo announced the pedal in late October 2019. Guitar World reported the launch on October 28, 2019, describing it as an analog stompbox delivering vintage tape echo-like sounds at a $58.99 street price1. MusicRadar and gearnews.com followed with their own coverage the next day36. RockBoard's PedalPedia carries the pedal as the R-10 Nascar Delay by JOYO2.

What reviewers said

Press coverage treated the pedal as a value proposition. gearnews.com's Jef called it "an attractive proposition for those on a budget, especially if you prefer that analogue delay tone"6. Pedal of the Day's 2020 review praised its simplicity and its warm, natural repeats4. No reviewer claimed it competes with feature-rich digital delays; its appeal was squarely the analog BBD voice at a budget price.

Questions

Is the Joyo Nascar Delay analog?

Yes. The Nascar Delay is an analog delay pedal built around the classic bucket-brigade device (BBD) circuit, the same topology used by vintage analog delays. Joyo says it is inspired by the classic BBD circuit, and press coverage from Guitar World, MusicRadar and gearnews.com all describe it as analog rather than digital.

What is the difference between the Joyo Nascar Delay and the R-10 Nascar Delay?

They are the same pedal. When Joyo announced the pedal in October 2019, press coverage called it both the Nascar Delay and the R-10 Nascar Delay, and Joyo's own product page lists it as the R-10 Nascar Delay with Delay, F.back and Mix controls. The R-10 name places it in Joyo's R series of compact pedals.

What does the LED mode toggle do on the Joyo Nascar Delay?

The toggle selects one of three LED light modes: Sync, Always, and Off. In Sync the LED blinks in time with the delay, Always keeps it lit continuously, and Off turns it off. It affects the indicator light only, not the delay sound itself.

Does the Joyo Nascar Delay have tap tempo?

No. The pedal has no tap tempo and no stereo option. Delay time is set with the Delay knob, and gearnews.com noted that adding tap tempo or stereo would likely have raised the price well above its budget positioning.
