The R-23 LEGAL DONE is a noise gate pedal made by JOYO. A noise gate sits in the signal chain and mutes the signal when the guitar stops playing, which is how it deals with the hum and hiss that high-gain pedals and amps tend to produce. JOYO describes the R-23 as using a unique noise gate circuit and a strong signal recognition system that removes unwanted hum and noise from guitar amps and pedals while retaining the guitar's original tone completely1.
What it does
The pedal's job is to shut out the noise floor that builds up in a pedalboard and amplifier setup. According to JOYO, the R-23's circuit and signal recognition system remove the unwanted hum and noise produced by amps and pedals effectively, and do so without taking anything away from the guitar's own tone1. That balance, cutting noise when you stop playing but letting every note through when you play, is what any gate is judged on.
Setup: 2 cable and 4 cable method
One feature JOYO highlights is that the R-23 supports both the 2 cable method and the 4 cable method1. In a standard 2 cable setup, the pedal sits in line with the rest of the board, between the guitar and the amp. In a 4 cable method setup, the gate is placed so it can act on the amp's effects loop as well as the front end, which lets it clean up noise from the preamp section too. Players with a loop-equipped amp can therefore choose the wiring that suits their rig.
Manual
JOYO makes an R-23 manual available as a PDF on the product page, posted there on 31 March 20231.
