The Keeley Noble Screamer is a 4-in-1 overdrive and boost pedal that puts two classic green overdrive circuits in one box: the Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS808) and the Nobels ODR-11. Instead of choosing between them, you can mix and match their tone stacks and clipping stages with two small toggle switches, giving four distinct voices from a three-knob pedal1. It was the first pedal in Keeley's 4-in-1 series and the first to use the company's new aluminum wedge enclosure234.

Keeley Electronics describes the concept as a way to "combine your favorite parts of different overdrive & boost pedals in order to create hybrid sounds no one has ever played through before"3. Pedal of the Day put it another way: "It's almost like pedal-modeling, except these are 100% analog circuits"5.

A Tube Screamer and an ODR-1 in one pedal

The two parent circuits are among the most copied overdrives ever made. The Tube Screamer is a soft-clipping, mid-focused overdrive; the ODR-1 is a hard-clipping overdrive with its own tone shaping. Guitar Pedal X describes the Noble Screamer as pairing "Nobels ODR-1 and Ibanez TS808 circuits in a custom wedge enclosure," with "2 complementary classic circuits, one soft clipping, the other hard clipping, and each with their own classic tone stack"1.

Robert Keeley, who designed the pedal, decoupled the drive section from the sound control, so the clipping stage and the tone stack can each be chosen independently4. The result, as Gearnews put it, is "a 4-in-1 pedal that gives you two very familiar drive circuits and two brand-new, amp-like overdrive and distortion sounds"4.

The pedal launched in September 2023 and sold quickly: Robert Keeley has said around 2000 units moved to dealers and customers before or on the release date1011. Guitar Pedal X later called it "the very recent Noble Screamer runaway success" when covering the follow-up12.

The controls

The control layout is deliberately simple: three knobs, two toggle switches and one footswitch13. Gearnews called it "pleasantly simple in its operation. Making it perfect for many guitarists, especially those who don't like menu diving"4.

ControlWhat it does
DriveSets the amount of overdrive1
ToneShapes the high end; its behavior depends on the Tone toggle position8
LevelSets the output volume1
Tone toggleChooses the tone stack: OD (Spectrum EQ) or TS (LPF EQ)1
Drive toggleChooses the clipping character: OD (hard) or TS (soft)1
FootswitchEngages the pedal; hold for two seconds to switch between true bypass and buffered8

The Tone toggle changes how the Tone control behaves: in OD mode it works as a spectrum control that goes from flat to a treble and bass boost, while in TS mode it acts as a low-pass filter, the Tube Screamer's familiar tone shape21415. The Drive toggle selects the clipping style, with OD giving a harder, more aggressive drive and TS a softer, more tube-like one2.

The four tone and clipping combinations

Because the tone stack and the clipping stage are chosen separately, the two toggles yield four voices13:

Toggle settingMode nameWhat it is
OD + ODODR-1 ClassicThe ODR-1's tone stack with its hard clipping1
TS + TSTS808 ClassicThe TS808's tone stack with its soft clipping1
TS + ODODR-1 with TS808 LPFODR-1 clipping with the Tube Screamer's low-pass tone filter1
OD + TSTS808 with ODR-1 SpectrumTS808 clipping with the ODR-1's spectrum tone control1

Guitar Pedal X's reviewer found the OD+OD mode "best balanced for the overall most satisfying output"1. On Premier Guitar's demo, the two drive positions were described as "hard clipping more aggressive Overdrive" in OD mode and "soft clipping more tube like overdrive" in TS mode2.

"The Noble Screamer sounds delightful across the board."
Premier Guitar's reviewer9

Premier Guitar's full review concluded that Keeley "marries the best of two beloved green machines in one smart box," calling it "a smarter, cooler, and more versatile way to access and reshape those bedrock tones"9.

In Premier Guitar's demo video of the 4-in-1 series, Tom Butwin walks through the pedal's voices and its $199.00 price1623:

Buffer, bypass and switching

The pedal uses Keeley's "Vitamin K" infused buffer, which the maker describes as providing "noise-free switching" with no tone loss6. Guitar.com reported that the buffer "can be turned off"10, and the bypass is switchable on the fly: MusicRadar explains that you "simply hold down the footswitch for two seconds to alternate between true bypass and buffered"8. That makes it usable either way on a pedalboard, whether you want a buffer early in the chain or a pure true-bypass pedal.

The buffer toggle is done by holding the footswitch, not by an internal switch, so you can change bypass mode mid-gig without opening the pedal8.

Where it is made and what it costs

The Noble Screamer is entirely manufactured by Keeley Electronics in Oklahoma City, USA610. It was the first pedal in Keeley's new aluminum enclosure, a proprietary gently-sloping wedge shape manufactured by RKFX in the US, with color-coded milled and anodized aluminum knobs138. MusicRadar noted the look: "green knobs on textured black painted metal"8.

Pricing as reported:

  • $199.99 USD, current list price (October 2026)6
  • $199 USD at launch in 2023, with €259 in the EU and £199 in the UK reported by Guitar Pedal X18
  • £215 UK recommended retail price reported by Guitar.com at launch10

It is available direct from the Keeley Electronics webstore and at leading dealers1. The 4-in-1 format carried on after the Noble Screamer with pedals such as the Keeley Muse Driver, and Keeley's overdrive range now also includes the Keeley Manis and the Keeley Blues Disorder. Questions

Is the Keeley Noble Screamer true bypass?

It can be. The pedal switches between true bypass and buffered bypass on the fly: you hold down the footswitch for two seconds to alternate between the two. The buffer is Keeley's Vitamin K design, intended for noise-free switching with no tone loss.

Can you turn off the buffer on the Noble Screamer?

Yes. Holding the footswitch for two seconds toggles between buffered and true bypass, so the buffer can be switched out during operation. In true bypass mode the pedal's buffer is out of the signal chain entirely.

Where is the Keeley Noble Screamer made?

It is entirely manufactured by Keeley Electronics in Oklahoma City, USA. The enclosure is a new proprietary wedge shape, made of aluminum and manufactured by RKFX in the US, and the Noble Screamer was the first pedal to use it.

Is the Noble Screamer analog?

Yes. Reviewers describe it as 100 percent analog circuits. The four voices are real analog combinations of two classic circuits rather than digital modeling, which is why Pedal of the Day compared the concept to pedal modeling while stressing that it is all analog.

How much does the Keeley Noble Screamer cost?

The current list price is $199.99 USD. At launch in 2023 it was priced at $199 in the US, with UK pricing reported at £199 and £215 by different outlets. It is sold direct from the Keeley Electronics webstore and at leading dealers.
