The Line 6 POD Express is an ultra-portable family of amp and effects processors built around models derived from the company's HX family of processors, the same lineage behind the Line 6 Helix. It launched in two versions, one for electric guitar and one for bass, with a high-gain Black edition following later1. Each unit packs amp models, cab models, effects, a looper, a tuner and a USB audio interface into a stompbox-sized plastic enclosure that can run on AA batteries23.

Guitar World's reviewer described it as a compact unit that "comes loaded with HX-derived amp and effects models", and noted that its battery power, plastic casing, headphone socket and consumer-style volume wheel suggest it is aimed at headphone practice4. Guitar.com's review called it "a compact but fully-featured amp modeller and multi-effects pedal" in the same spirit5.

What it is and what it does

The POD Express is a multi-effects pedal that models amps, cabinets and effects in one box. Both the Guitar and Bass versions feature seven amps, seven cabs and 17 effects, plus a looper, tuner, tap tempo, noise gate, headphone output and USB-C for recording8. The guitar version's amp models are grouped as Chime, Dynamic, Crunch, Heavy, Lead, Clean and Special3, and its effects cover Distortion, Modulation, Delay and Reverb3.

Line 6 positions the whole family as a portable toolbox: the maker says the models "derived from the award-winning HX family of processors ensure exceptional sound quality and authentic feel"2. On the Black version, the maker describes a sound "derived from Line 6's flagship Helix product"6.

The controls

The front panel is laid out into five sections: Dist, Amp, Mod, Delay and Reverb4. MusicRadar described the design as old school but accessible: "Five rotary controls and two footswitches feel old school but accessible"9. There are no menu screens9.

ControlWhat it does
DistSelects distortion types: Boost, Overdrive, Distortion and Fuzz on the guitar version9
AmpCentral rotary control for selecting the amp model; LED segments around it show the range of whichever control you are turning41
ModModulation effects3
DelayDelay effects3
ReverbReverb types: Spring, Hall, Plate and Space on the guitar version9
Alt (hold)Accesses amp gain, three-band EQ and channel volume4
ON footswitchEnables or bypasses the device; LED lights white when enabled6
TAP footswitchTap tempo; doubles as the tuner on the Black version17

The unit works in either Preset mode, where you can save 21 of your own presets, or Manual mode4. Presets are saved to banks, each represented by a color, and can be scrolled with the encoder or the two footswitches10. On the Black edition, both footswitches together scroll through presets, and holding Ch. Volume saves one7.

Power and connections

Every POD Express can be powered by three AA batteries (included) or an optional 9V DC power supply sold separately, such as the Line 6 DC-1g6. When running on batteries, the unit powers on when a cable is connected to the input jack and powers off when it is disconnected116. Guitar Pedal X lists the Black edition's power spec as 9V DC at 500mA7.

Connections on the standard versions are an input, stereo L/R outputs, a headphone output, one TRS socket for an external footswitch, and USB-C4. The headphone port makes stereo monitoring possible3. The Black version adds a 4-in/4-out USB audio interface and stereo 1/4" outputs, with L/MONO used alone for mono devices6.

The 500mA current draw7 is well above what a typical 9V battery or a low-current daisy chain output supplies, so plan on the included AA batteries or a dedicated 9V DC supply.

Guitar, Bass and Black versions

The family launched with two versions: one for electric guitar and one for bass1. The POD Express Bass is, according to guitar.com's reviewer, the same hardware as the POD Express Guitar other than a different set of amp models and effects10. Its controls are Comp, Synth, Amp, Dist, Mod/Delay, Alt, an On/Off switch and a Tuner/Tap switch, with seven amps, seven cabs and compression types of Optical, LA, Deluxe and Limiter912.

The POD Express Black, announced in October 2024, updates the platform for the practicing guitarist who wants classic and modern high-gain tones61. It keeps the original format and modulation section, and its seven amp types are Cruz, Anvil, Slay, Mega, Avant, Pure and Dirge17. Guitar Pedal X maps those voicings to specific models:

Amp typeModeled on
PurePRS Archon Clean7
DirgeSunn Model T7
CruzOrange Rockerverb 1007
AnvilLine 6 Badonk7
SlayPRS Archon Lead7
MegaDiezel VH4 Mega7
AvantREVV Generator 120 Red7

The Black edition's Distortion, Boost, Modulation and Delay/Reverb knobs each traverse four independent effects and also serve as secondary parameters for the amp EQ, with distortion voicings of OpAmp, LED, Distort and Fuzz on the Gain knob17. It was available at launch for $1791, which Guitar Pedal X called "an excellent option" for a metal-inspired or heavier-gain beginner7.

Recording and expansion

Connect the POD Express to a computer or mobile device and it works as a portable audio interface11, so you can record without buying a separate interface or play along to music10. An optional expression pedal can be connected for volume control, along with up to two assignable external footswitches to select presets or turn effects on and off, or a pedal plus a single footswitch211. Guitar.com's reviewer noted you can even add a dual footswitch to turn two effects of your choice on or off10.

What reviewers said

Guitar World's review found the HX-derived models the highlight, while pointing to the plastic casing and practice-oriented design4. In Guitar World's budget multi-effects buying guide, the POD Express was described as delivering "HX quality amp models and effects in a teeny tiny package", with the verdict: "Ultimately, it's an excellent all-rounder, even if it's not quite a master in any single area."13 Guitar World's coverage of the Black edition also noted the original launched at just $1241, though the Guitar and Bass versions were listed at $179 at announcement13114, and later reviews list $179/£19913114 and $179.99/£14913114, so UK pricing varies between sources.

For bass, guitar.com's reviewer found that "All of the amp models sound good, and the various compressor effects are a welcome addition for dialling in a good bass sound."10 Bass Gear Mag described the Bass version as "a compact package not much larger than a standard stompbox"12.

Where it came from

The POD Express revives the POD name from Line 6's original amp-modeling line, which the maker now lists among its legacy products, noting "POD is no longer made"15. The name also appeared on a Pocket POD Express, likewise discontinued16. MusicRadar framed the POD Express and POD Express Bass as following the Line 6 POD Go in making the format a portable companion for players9.
