LPD Pedals Embers Overdrive

Overdrive

The LPD Pedals Embers Overdrive is a Klon-inspired overdrive pedal from Mesa, Arizona's LPD Pedals, a company that in recent months had been releasing more streamlined pedals than it had become known for. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio described the Embers as the company's four-knob take on the Klon Centaur, "the simplest and probably most hyped stompbox of all times."1

What it does

The Embers is built around the Klon Centaur circuit, the transparent overdrive design that has inspired a whole field of copies and variations. Where a straight Klon-style circuit typically offers three controls, the Embers adds a fourth: a Bass knob, giving extra control over the low end beyond what the Klon-style layout provides.1

De Gregorio's writeup said the pedal "recreates the magic transparent quality of the original both when used as a simple clean boost or as a tool to saturate" an amp's input. In practice that means the pedal can be run with the gain low as a clean boost to push an amp harder, or with more gain to drive the front end of a tube amp into saturation, while aiming to keep the guitar's basic character intact. For how this kind of pedal sits alongside other gain stages, see Overdrive Pedals and the Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer comparison1.

As of the January 2024 coverage, the Embers Overdrive had not yet been released, and little information beyond the circuit concept and its controls was available.1

Context in the LPD Pedals range

The Embers sits in a wider conversation about Klon Centaur-style overdrives. Delicious Audio describes it as LPD Pedals' "four knob take on the simplest and probably most hyped stompbox of all times: the Centaur," and the publication added the Embers to its exhaustive article about Klon Centaur Overdrive clones.1

Delicious Audio also added the Embers to its article on Klon Centaur overdrive clones, placing it among the many pedals that follow the Centaur's design.1
