The Mattoverse Inflection Point is a modulation pedal from Wisconsin-based boutique builder Mattoverse Electronics that packs four functions into one box: a full-featured tremolo, a vibrato, a short reverb, and a clean boost1. A toggle switch on the face of the pedal chooses between tremolo and vibrato mode, and eight user-selectable waveshapes, including two Random settings, shape how the modulation moves1. Mattoverse says it works great with guitar, bass, or synths1.
What it does to your sound
In tremolo mode the pedal pulses your volume up and down at a rate you set; in vibrato mode it modulates pitch instead. Premier Guitar describes it as an optical tremolo/vibrato design, and found you can also create basic chorus sounds and a quasi-reverb ambient effect by working the controls4. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson found the vibrato "reaches wobbly, warbly detuning" at its peak, while the Sine and Lumps waveforms offer curvier modulation5.
The eight waveforms are Ramp Up, Ramp Down, Square, Triangle, Sine, Lumps, Stepped, and Random5. Premier Guitar lists them as triangle, sine, square, two sawtooth shapes (ramp up and ramp down), sweep, random slope, and random pulse4. The two Random settings let the modulation pattern change unpredictably rather than repeating a fixed cycle1.
On top of the modulation there is the Space control, a short digital reverb. Premier Guitar explains that it adds a PT2399 digital delay chip to the circuit, with short, dense regeneration for subtle ambience; there are no speed or feedback controls, just a single "more" knob4. Guitar Pedal X calls it a short digital reverb that accents the modulation5.
The controls
The Inflection Point has blend and output controls in addition to the expected rate and depth knobs4. The blend is a dry/wet control: in vibrato mode it governs the balance between your dry signal and the vibrato/reverb3, and Delicious Audio notes it lets you dial the clean signal back in for subtler effects2. Under the hood, the rate and depth knobs alter the brightness and pulsation speed of an LED, which determines the rate and intensity of the effects4.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rate | Sets the modulation speed via the LED pulsation4 |
| Depth | Sets the modulation intensity via the LED brightness4 |
| Waveform | Selects one of eight waveshapes, including two Random settings15 |
| Blend | Dry/wet balance; in vibrato mode it balances dry against vibrato/reverb13 |
| Output | Sets the output level1 |
| Space | Adds short digital reverb, a single "more" knob14 |
| Mode toggle | Chooses Tremolo or Vibrato1 |
| Tap footswitch | Dedicated tap tempo, usable separately from the rate control54 |
There is also a 1/8" sync-input jack for external clocks and sequencers. Premier Guitar notes the pedal's synth influence is evident here: when a sync signal is present, the speed knob is disabled and the external clock takes over4. Two internal trim pots let you fine-tune the effects to taste4.
Versions: the original and the compact enclosure
The original Inflection Point occupies a standard BB-sized enclosure4. In December 2020 Mattoverse introduced a new version in a smaller compact-size case, with pedalboard-friendly top-mounted jacks2. Guitar Pedal X describes the current pedal as "a properly neat compact Multi-FX with the perfect complement of flavours and controls"5.
The circuit is the same regardless of enclosure size, except that the CV Gate Rate Sync feature is not standard on the new smaller model1. If syncing the pedal to external gear matters to you, check which enclosure you are buying.
What reviewers said
Premier Guitar's review listed the optical vibrato and tremolo, the eight waveform options, tap tempo, the wet/dry blend, and the external sync input as pros, while noting the absence of a stereo output and a battery compartment4. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson was more enthusiastic still:
"I concur with my readers that this is indeed a truly great and properly versatile Multi-FX / Multi-Modulation pedal5!"
The reviewer verdict on the Inflection Point comes from Guitar Pedal X, whose writer concluded that it is "a truly great and properly versatile Multi-FX / Multi-Modulation pedal"5. In vibrato mode, the Blend control governs the balance between dry and vibrato/reverb3.
He noted that as of 2024 the price was £199 from the Mattoverse Webstore5, against the maker's current US list price of $199.001.
