The Moog MF-104 is an analog delay pedal in the Moogerfooger format. The MF-104 line is discontinued: Moog's own materials refer to "the discontinued Moog MF-104 BBD delay"12.

What it does to your sound

Because the MF-104 is analog, Vintage Synth Explorer notes that it has "a very warm overtone that's nicer than most digital delays" and calls it "perfect for re-creating an analog slap-back echo effect"3. The pedal has been used by Stereolab and Air3.

Delay time and controls

The original MF-104's delay time is listed as 40 to 80 milliseconds (0.4 to 0.8 seconds)3. On the MF-104M, a switch toggles between Short (40 to 400 ms) and Long (80 to 800 ms) delay modes, a range Premier Guitar's reviewer and Pedal of the Day's Mike B both describe the same way41. No Treble reported the reissue as "giving up to 800ms of analog delay"6.

The MF-104M's announcement also brought a 6-waveshape LFO, dedicated tap tempo, Spillover Mode, and "MIDI control and recall of every function," with an all-analog signal path throughout5.

Connections and expression input

The MF-104 is a mono pedal, with a single mono input and a single mono output3. Beyond the panel controls, TIME, MIX and FEEDBACK can be externally controlled by a Moogerfooger EP1 expression pedal or an equivalent, or by CV control3. That CV and expression control carried into the MF-104M alongside its MIDI input375.

History: from 2000 to the chip shortage and the 2019 return

  • The MF-104 line is discontinued, with Moog referring to "the discontinued Moog MF-104 BBD delay"12.

The MF-104 and MF-104M are discontinued. The 2019 batch was a limited run sold only from Moog's Asheville store, so used prices and availability vary.

Because the pedal has no memory of its own, players who want presets have looked to third-party gear to expand what the discontinued Moog MF-104 BBD delay can do32.

Moog's delay line grew around the MF-104. The Moog Minifooger MF Delay and Minifooger MF Analog Delay are compact alternatives; Pedal of the Day's reviewer found the MF Analog Delay's Drive section and self-oscillating Feedback made it a strong compact delay. MusicRadar's 2015 roundup rated the Moog MF Delay 4.5 out of 5 as a cheaper route to Moogerfooger MF-104M-style analog tones. Moog also announced an Analog Delay 500 series module at AES 2012, described as the world's first delay designed exclusively for the 500 series format, with a 100% analog signal path and MIDI sync. More recently, Behringer announced the BM-14M, a new analog bucket-brigade delay recreating the MF-104M with added features including MIDI input. For other approaches to repeats, see Delay Pedals.

Questions

Is the Moog MF-104 an analog or digital delay?

It is an analog delay. Vintage Synth Explorer describes the original MF-104 as an authentic analog delay device with a delay range of 40 milliseconds to 0.8 seconds, and the later MF-104M keeps an all-analog signal path. Because it is analog, the site notes it has a very warm overtone compared with most digital delays.

How long is the delay time on the Moogerfooger MF-104M?

The MF-104M offers up to 800 ms of analog delay time. A switch toggles between a Short mode covering 40 to 400 ms and a Long mode covering 80 to 800 ms, so players can set everything from tight slapback to longer repeats.

Is the Moog MF-104 stereo?

No. Vintage Synth Explorer lists the MF-104 as mono input and mono output, so it takes a single mono signal and returns a single mono signal.

Can the MF-104M be controlled with MIDI?

Yes. When Moog announced the MF-104M in 2012 it came with MIDI control and recall of every function, alongside tap tempo and Spillover Mode. Gearnews describes it as having full MIDI control.

Is the Moog MF-104M still made?

No. Moog suspended production in 2015 after running out of the bucket-brigade chips the pedal needs, and the MF-104 is described as discontinued. A small batch was built in 2019 from a newly found cache of chips, sold only from Moog's Asheville store.

Does the Moog MF-104 have presets?

No. Vintage Synth Explorer lists the original MF-104 with no memory, so settings are set by hand from the panel. The later MF-104M adds MIDI recall of every function, and the third-party Vongon VF-104 controller was made to add presets to the MF-104M.
